Pay close attention to the interior "convertible only" plastic trim pieces. Examples include the pieces above the sun visors and below the convertible latches. Also the pieces that trim out where the shoulder belt attaches to the b-pillar. Another item to look at it the convertble top frame. Make sure it is complete and goes up and down easily. It is important that the pieces are there. You can repair the plastic trim if there are cracks by reinforcing the back side with thin aluminum strips and epoxy. Don't worry much about the condition of the top itself, as it is readily available. Other items of concern are the convertible spoiler, tonneau release cable (especially the 1987-88 style) and side seals for the convertible top. If many of these pieces are missing just walk away. It doen't matter how much of a bargain the car seems, these parts will be priced as if gold plated, IF you can even find them. Also know that there were runing changes to the convertibles during their production run. For example, there are three different styles of convertible frame, which only makes finding the right part all the more difficult. My recommendation it to find the best example of convertible you can. It costs a lot less money overall to keep one in good shape than to try to restore one that was neglected. The newer the vehicle the better. GM and ASC improved the car up until the end.
