Electric Tonneu switch problem???
Hey all, I have a 92 Z28 convertible and my tonneu switch stopped working. So I got out my test light to try and figure out what has power, ground, ect.... and when I grounded the switch with my test light, my selnoids popped the tonneu up??? Ok then, so I figured the ground was bad somewhere and decieded to just make a new ground for the switch. No problem, just gounded it somewhere else and poof, it works!! SO, now I get into the car and try to start the car and, nothing!! It turns out the new ground wire kept the car from starting!! So I removed it and now the car starts fine and the tonneu stopped working again. Anyone have this problem??
P.S. by the way, I did have to replace the switch with a hatch realese switch a few years ago, so thats whats in there now.

The tan with white stripe wire is ground for the switch. It grounds through the starter and through the parking brake. Also, what condition is your trunk pull-down unit? If the striker-sensing switch on the trunk pull-down unit is bad or the housing is cracked badly the tonneau switch will think the trunk is open preventing you from opening the tonneau.

My 92 dosent have a trunk pull down unit. It never has. Ive tried to follow the ground wire from the switch, it seems to go twords the back of the car. Short of pulling up all the carpet, your proably right Lonsal, Ill bet the ground wire is broken somewhere in there.

Re: Electric Tonneu switch problem???
It's been a while since you posted so maybe you have a solution. If not, I might have the answer. I had the same issue and it would fire when grounded. My good friend/mechanic said he found a relay in the back by the trunk. It was blown. What the relay does is make sure the trunk is closed before allowing the tonneau release switch to work. Mine was blown so the relay never closed and my switch didn't work. He replaced it and now it works great. I had an automatic pull-down trunk and it was working when the tonneau switch wasn't. Hope that helps!
