My heart goes out to you. How odd is that your car decides to die in front of a cemetary?

It wasn't too fast, In fact, when i knew it caught, i KNEW i had no chance of keeping it. I hopped out... took a picture, then called 911... lol.. As soon as i find my phone adapter, i've got like 30+ pictures of it going up.

I was pulling out the stuff in the backseat when the flames started comming up on the sides and getting me. All i really lost was a few CD's and my work keys. ...ohh, and my pride....

Now i'm driving a kia thats been in like 4 accidents. *sigh*

Guess I'm never buying a Mr.Gasket fuel pressure regulator... Thats horrible. I think when I got from TBI to carb and have to mess with all the fuel lines and returns I'm gonna keep a little fire exstinguisher in the back to make me feel better.

Oh god, I feel sick looking at that. I called my dad in to see those pics, he's far from being a thirdgenner but he is shocked. He sends his condolences as well. So sorry to see that, ugh, I dont know what to say. My car is a POS but I love it and I would be BESIDE MYSELF if that ever happened. If my car looked like that and I had to watch it burn..ugh. Sorry again man

Wow dude, I seriously got a tear in my eye after seing your car. I just thought of what I would do if that was my vert! WOW,
Do you think that a fire extinguisher would have helped you??? I am guessing no, but there is a chance that it could help?!?! Dude I feel for you, if you want some of the parts I'll give them to you for free. I have some parts for sale, check it out, pick what you want, and I'll ship em to ya for like 2 bucks.
This offer just goes to the poster, and nobody else (sorry)

Now go check it out. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...ls-timing.html

Thanks Guys... I appreciate the support.

And thanks xlwhellraiser, but i'm not building her back. She was a bitch of a car and deserved to burn.. lol!!!

actually, i'm pulling the engine, tranny, and some of the more expensive suspension stuff, and I'm looking for a new body. ...the Real tragedy is it was an orignal '86 ASC vert before they were offically contracted by GM.

I am also persuing a lawsuit against Mr Gasket. Although i can't find a decent Freaking lawer in MD.... Anyone know a good Tort Law Lawyer (product liability) ??

Its going to be hard to prove it was that.

Im not defending Mr. Gasket or anything but, how can you prove that...

It was put on right?

You didnt have a fuel leak?

Nothing else was mecanically wrong with it?

it wasnt vandelism?

I just think your going to have a problem sueing a company when so many variables can cause a car fire, plus they have way more money then you do to spend on laywers.....

Plus, why you saw a fire, what the hell you were doing taking pics? I would have called 911 and then tryed to put out the fire.

this is why i went out and bought a fire extinguisher for my iroc, even though it won't put out an inferno it might stop the little frire from spreading long enough for the fire department to help.

i feel for ya man, i hope the engine is alright

It was put on right? - Yup, I have witness's that saw it was leaking around the ****, not hoses.

You didnt have a fuel leak? - in reality, there was a slight leak in the rear, which might kill the case, but that didn't start the fire. and no one knew that.

Nothing else was mecanically wrong with it? - there was always something wrong with it, but again, didn't cause the fire, and no one involved knows.

it wasnt vandelism? - No, there wasn't a leak when i first started driving.

I just think your going to have a problem sueing a company when so many variables can cause a car fire, plus they have way more money then you do to spend on laywers.....

----absolutly correct, But thats why i'm bringing this to a lawyer to see if it's even worth it. Probably not. But i gotta try. I KNOW for a fact that my car would be around today if it wasn't for their peice of **** part.

Plus, why you saw a fire, what the hell you were doing taking pics? I would have called 911 and then tryed to put out the fire.
----Like i said, tank had a leak, as soon as the front caught, i knew the back would... I had nothing to save the car with. no one was around at that moment. so **** it, took a picture. called 911, got my stuff out. and started taking more pics...

Moral of this story is dont buy a cheep fuel pressure regulator from Mr. Gasket.

sorry bout that... that really sucks to have a cheep part like a fuel regulator go bad and cause lots of expensive damage like that... good luck with it!

Yea, i wouldn't have relied on it.... except i had no choice when i was driving it up to MD in the first place. And then i only drove it like 2-3 times after that.

I have a really nice Holly pressure regulator that came with the new pump i had to install on the side of 95, except autozone didn't carry the nipples to let me use it, so i had to use Mr Gasket ****. It just didn't even occur to me that it would blow after a 96 days.... (6 days past warrenty... ****ers)

truely awful

thats horrible sorry to hear it. she was awesome may she rest in peace. i hope that never happens to my car. she's old but i still have alot of money tired up in her. insurance companies simply dont care, they would look at the fact that my car is a 1989, 18 years old and would give me 500 bucks. hopefully you had the car apprased. looks like you had a whole lot of money tied up in that vert. i treat my car like gold and i would be devestated if anything ever happened to her. i carry full coverage on her, glass, collision, fire and theft, and comp. but i still know that insurance companies wouldnt give me much so i have to be very protective of my car.

Holy crap! Man...Ive been doing alot of work with my fuel pressure lately and have been so freaked out I put a extinguisher in my back seat. Its my stupid schrader valve that leaks some right after I pull the pressure guage off. Only problem is that I cant find another stem for it. I've been worried about it leaking while I drive.

1- I drove it, because i couldn't afford to tow it... nor could i leave a car leaking gasoline on the highway.... I used some material I had available to seal around the regulator so i could drive it to next exit and park it... which would have worked fine... except next exit was another freaking highway, and that next exit was next to a big *** cemetary,... so by the time i was pulling over to park, I suppose the heat of the exhuast compromised my temporary seal.

2- I had liability. No reason to even call it in.

3- I Basicly had a brain fart, probably due to the heat, headache, frustration, and imaptience... but i should have just ran out and picked up another fuel pressure regulator... and it never really crossed my mind, or the 4 other people that were there with me.. retrospect.. i feel like a tard.

Really sorry to see, and hear about your car, but in retrospec, when something like this happens, it happens so fast, that it is easy to say coulda, shoulda.

Rule of thumb though, with any type of electic fuel pump, fuel injection, if suspect of a leak, turn the ignition off immediately, so as the fuel pump isn't constantly pumping gas.
This happened to a marina in Edgewood, Md. many years ago, when during a nomal tune up the mechanic just bumping the ignition had a spark jump from a disconnected coil wire to the carb, and a small fire erupted.
The owner of the boat, and the mechanic went into panic mode, and jumped off the boat with the ignition still on, and of coarse gas still being pumped.
Result was about 6 boats were destroyed to the water line.

Makes me sick seeing your pictures, but you are alright, and you can rebuild another car. Good luck, and my condolences to your loss of a great looking car.

Ok, I have to ask. Why couldn't you leave a car leaking gas beside the highway? Kind of ironic that it died in front of a cemetary.

Holy crap! Sorry I just tuned in and I'm totally shocked! That would be my worst nightmare. I work for a fire dept and sadly I've put out my share of car fires, and believe me, the fire can spread surprisingly and incredibly fast. Plus the smoke is really toxic (due to all the plastics, etc). So for those who wonder why you couldn't put it out, unless you hit the source of the flame really early and really hard, just get yourself to safety. I'm glad you're all right.
I hope that everything works out OK.

Serpentineocean mentioned in his first post that he was going to salvage any parts and buy another vert. Gotta love your devotion!

OMG! So does this mean I'm one of only a few people who saw this car in action? Let me tell you all -- she was beautiful...definitely a head turner and sounded so baaaad! I'm so sorry about this.

If you're looking for another third gen vert I have a '92 sitting on my carport we can talk about after you've recovered.

Man, I feel so bad for you!

Thanks all. Yes i plan on going to a Third Gen Vert again, BUT, i'm looking at my financial situation now, and I am going to sell the engine/transmission.

I need to pull all the specs on it, and clean her back up, but the engine shouldn't be damaged much at all. Most of the fire was back at the gas-tank.

I will put a post up in the WTB/FS section. But she's practicly brand new engine, 750 carb w/ weiand supercharger, March serpentine system, Eagle evertything. And we estimated her around 450hp. New clutch, and Tranny was a rebuilt T5, although other then that i dunno much about the tranny as it came w/ the car.

also probably include front sway bar (I don't know if the rear sway bar was comprised in the fire), wonder bar, and TDS's Sub-Frame connecters.

I will start pulling parts hopefully this weekend, so if anyone wants dib's around here, i'd much rather not deal with shipping costs to somone else.

-Later- *sigh*

Sorry for your loss, man.

I lost a full trick van back in the day to an electrical
fire that wouldn't go out even after empting an entire
extinquisher at it.
I couldn't even salvage the cragars, the heat was so intense.

thats why, at the shop i used ot work at, any car with a new/reworked fuel system got a fire extinguisher for a couple weeks. sorry dude, but honestly, why didnt you even make sure nothing was leaking before you drove it... granted it coulda been worse but it also couldve turned out better, leaving things that leak fuel alone is kind of halfassed to me.

Wow, totally sorry for your loss man. That would be devastating to anyone with a thirdgen with somemuch time wraped up in to it. But you have convinced me to go get a FIRE EXTINGUISHER and put it in my maro. But I am not sure where I should mount it. If some one else knows where a good place to mount one please post up. I was thinking maybe in the glove box if it was small enough, or on the side of the center console up near the radio, or in the rear storage compartment(but that might not work since a fire could knock out your power to your power release for the trunk). So please post some pics and show other fellow thirdgeners the importance of a fire extinguisher and where to mount one in their own personal third gen.
