New Vert Owner

Hey hey, just picked up this 91rs this weekend and kinda excited bout gettin to work on it. It has the 305 with pw, pl, cruise. First things first though, gotta fix the fuel pump, yay! Debating whether to do it myself or not. A lift would be so handy right now.

Re: New Vert Owner

looks like weatherstripping and alot of dirt.

if you're gonna drop the tank, i'd recommend putting in a good quality pump. its alot of work, so do a good job so that you'll only have to do it once in your life.

Re: New Vert Owner

The body is straight as an arrow, only one dent the size of a pea. There is some underbody rust but everything looks straight. I have a friend that paints so I'm gonna take a stab at painting a bumper or trunklid or something. I am so not loooking forward to dropping the tank. Poured gas directly in it and it fires up good, and no smoke. btw: 99k

Re: New Vert Owner

91's also had that tank recall. May want to consider replacing the tank since you'll be dropping it anyways.

Congrats on the purchase. Looks like it will clean up nicely

Re: New Vert Owner

Ya, I read about that recall. So...hows that work, is the dealer responsible for installation of the tank too? If so I would give them a little extra to slap a new fuel pump in there. Ha! A little extra what am I thinking, its a chevy dealer. Im going to call them this morning and see bout that tank.

UPDATE!! Re: New Vert Owner

Got the new fuel pump installed and fired right up last weekend! After a small issue with trash on the exhaust manifold the brakes locked up and had to drive her home. (slowly) Installing new brake hoses this afternoon, hopefully that will fix my problem.

What year was the tank recall and why?

Congrats on the new vert!! Nothing like a drive with the top down and the exhaust rumbling. It's the work that will quickly make it feel like yours and be the reason you won't want to get rid of it. Our vert had seen better days a few months ago and we brought her bake to life.

Check out our car project. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cama...nvertible.html

Re: New Vert Owner

Apparently there was a tank recall for our years but I called local GM dealer and gave them my vin. They said only recall for my car was seatbelt latches. Mattrick I read up on your restore, car is crazy clean I love it! Im going to look into dynamating my interior like you did.

Re: New Vert Owner

It wasn't dynamat brand...I think it was blox or something. Everyone knows what dynamat is so I referred to it by that name. I did have one square of dynamat and it looked identicle to this blox stuff. One of my friends who restores a lot of old hot rods swears by it and it is a lot cheaper than dynamat. The results were amazing...even for a convertible.

Thanks for the comments...a lot of tedious work that took days to do.

Re: New Vert Owner

The reason the Gas tank had a recalk was due to the solder joint, where the filler neck goes into the tank. Supposively there were pin holes in the solder joint that cause leakage.

Re: New Vert Owner

I played phone tag with GM for three weeks last year. I have a 92 vert and gas smells. First they told me that there were no recalls. Than they told me that there were, but my car was not one affected. Than they called me back and told me that I should take the car to a dealership to see what the problem is. However, the recall is not active anymore because of car's mileage, and because its older than 10 years.
I went back at them by clearly stating the letter written on the recall website (forgot it now). It stated that no matter how many owners, how old the car is, nor how many miles it has, a safety recall always stands.

He told me that they were not aware of that, and that they are not honoring those recalls. So, i told them that I might take this up with my lawyer, and he said "Go ahead". LOL.

I just took out the plastic around the filler neck and I could stick my arm through to get JB weld all around the neck. It worked great, but it wasn't my problem. LOL

If you need some steps on how to do this in 15 minutes let me know.
