91 v8 RS Vert
ok I have a 85 z28 which i placed for sale locally and a guy contacted me yesterday about a trade and well there is no doubt in my mind that i would accept it. Its an automatic 91 RS 5.0. So any known problems i should look for on his vert or what would make me not want the trade although my car doesn't run but has lots of engine upgrades and well this one works and he said everything is current on the car. I haven't actually seen it in person but he sent me these pix. He just said he would keep the 20" irocs which i agreed to. He's supposed to come take a better look at my car this weekend before we agree to trade. He said his works great and is currently registered so assuming all is well how much do u think his car is worth? here are a few pix oh and it has 120,000 miles

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
I think that car was on sale via ebay earlier this year.
So either:
A. nobody has bought it because something is f-up.
B. Bought it, doesnt like it.
C. pulling your leg.
Just verify that everything that is convert specific is there, and in good shape, works. Parts are very hard to find, and very expensive.

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
damn really do u know the location because this car is in southern california. He did mention that he bought it a few months ago but that he wanted a 5spd manual so was looking to get rid of it. Vert specific parts can you elaborate on this? i haven't really been up close to one before so don't know what vert specific parts i should look out for

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
I spent some time searching ebay and i also have an email for him searched that and there are no users with that email so i guess thats a good sign atleast i hope so
but i'll make sure to keep what u said in mind while looking at the car. I plan on taking a buddy of mine that works on drag cars for a living and is pretty mechanically inclined. I figure if he can't find anything wrong with it then thats good enough for me
but thanx for the heads up

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
make sure its got good weather stripping around the top. make sure the top is good, make sure the rear speaker panels are good, and the seat belt trim thats attached to them make sure theirs no frame damage, check the frame horns and core support. check for rust on the metal bumpers under the front and back. and make sure it runs like it should.
also if you havent noticed, its got the wrong front ground effect on it.

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
Going just by the pics, it looks like a nice car. The top's material looks in good shape. The trunk looks funny because it's not retracted by the pull down mechanism. Make sure it works. The tailpipes are butt ugly, but that a minor detail.
Operate verything you can . . .
- Try the trunk.
- Put the top up and down a few times. Make sure the front latches, the rear latch release and catch, and the tonneau cover and it's release all work properly.
- Try the doors. Make sure they align with the body and open and close nicely. The verts weaker frame will flex, and when abused will cause mislignment (or the door pins might just be worn).
- Also regarding the doors, look at the door frame at the lower right corner (bottom back corner of frame). A vert that has been aggressively driven causing a lot a flexing can cause visible cracking in this area. A tiny hairline crack may not be a big deal, but I have seen them as big as an inch long and slightly open.
- Look at the seats and carpeting (especially in the back) for discoloured stains or marks. This may be an indicator of bad water leaks.
The rest is basically the same stuff that applies to a t-top or hard-top (brakes, drivetrain, electrical, power options, AC, etc).
What's it worth? Hard to say without seeing a little more. For this one, anywhere from $3500 to as high as $6000. It's kind of a guess without taking it for a test drive, getting it inspected (drivetrain, suspension, brakes, etc) and the interior.
Good luck.

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
thanx thats exactly what i was hoping someone would tell me. I'm going to put all of that into a checklist lol and check out all of those areas. Also i am not looking for a show car i mean as long as its in decent shape i'll be satisfied. aslong as it doesn't leak fluid missing parts rust etc because well its an old car and understand there could be wear on the car but what u said about the door frames and to check for cracks is exactly what i was looking for thanx for your help

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
may not be the same car then, but it looks very similar to one that was on ebay.
The front GFX, that looks like its the angle the picture was taken at. If you look at the reflections, It looks right.
As for vert specific stuff...
top
storage lid
trunk
spoiler
rear interior panels
plastic trim under the sunvisors
plastic trim on the top, up by the latches
weatherstripping on top, and where the top meets the body.

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
Ok well you guys you've seen the pix of my car and here's a little more. The guy with the vert wanted me to get my car running before we trade so i did but once i got it running i started getting doubts. After installing the starter and getting the right bolt for crankshaft pulley it started right up. Took it to a local shop and got a Y-pipe fabbed up 3" piping with flowmaster, adjusted timing, he said he noticed a sound coming from my valves and he said that the valves were tightened all the way down which caused the pushrods to bend so he replaced them, fixed my powersteering, adjusted carb, and he sold me a edelbrock intake manifold that cleared my hood and man did this car drive great. So now i'm not sure that i want to make the trade now that my car drives so good.
Oh and it looked a lot better once i cleaned it up a bit took longer then expected the entire damn day
Am i crazy for not wanting to trade for a clean 91RS Vert for my z28 although my car has lots of mods and runs real good finally
I've just thrown so much money at this car over the years that i'd hate to see it go. What would you do if you were in my shoes

No matter the car, you will never get your money back out of it(well, unless its a 53 vette or something).
I've wanted a vert since the day I could drive, so I know what I would do. But I'm not you.

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
z28gsxr, I would go for it if everything checks out. I just picked up a 91 RS vert earlier this and love it. I get more looks and compiments than a brand new Mustang GT. (I only mention mustang because we don't curently have New SS's or z28s.) When I have the top down people always compliment it out their windows in traffic. It took me 4 years to finally buy a vert and I watched them get steadily more expensive and harder to find. I love hard top F-body's too, but there won't be a shortage of them anytime soon.
Check the weatherstripping, make sure the window panes don't rattle. The vert windows get loose from slamming with no top to catch them. Make sure the button on the console that releases the top is functioning. $200 plus to replace. If the back speakers are bad you will have a hell of a time replacements that fit. They are an odd size. Make sure the top goes up and down smoothly. It should not take any force to seat and lock.
The weather stripping, top alignment is the biggest thing. Mine looked great but still leaks like crazy, which consequently ruined the electric door locks.
As for price I paid $4750 for my 91, with broken AC but excellent paint, recently replaced top, good interior, good tires, 155K and runs perfect. And I do mean perfect. So perfect I almost feel bad to take the 305 out, but the LS1 is calling my name. I wouldn't pay much over 6K for an RS.
Bottom line...you will like the vert. You might just want to tweak it a little for power since you're used to the Z. It comes with a 2.73 rear end. Changing that made a big diff off the line.
Go topless. you'll be glad you did vbmenu_register("postmenu_3503759", true);

Re: 91 v8 RS Vert
Having owned 2 hardtop IROC-Z's, a convertible Z28, my girlfriend owning a ttop IROC-Z, and my sister owning a ttop Formula.....hardtops are boring and ttops are convertible wannabe's. Get the convertible if it checks out mechanically. Also make sure to check the carfax and take it to a shop and have them do an inspection before you buy it/trade for it. You'll love not having anything over your head on a summer day.

Is this going to be a even trade?
Vert's are nice you won't be disapointed. Just make sure you do your research on this trade before you pull the trigger..Good Luck....
