383 TPI build for 91 Vert

I have a 4 bolt marine 350 that my buddy and I were going to stroke to 383, his Dad worked at Chevy when third gens were new, so he will be doing the block machining. I got a TPI setup with harness and CPU from an 87 T/A. I was going to put it in my 91 RS, but unfortunatly I hydroplaned and hit the quarter panel and it tweaked the body pretty bad. I recently found a 91 RS Vert and I want to build this same motor for the vert.

We were thinking about going with the edelbrock performer heads and decent cam. I am not going to be smogging this car so that is not an issue.

Does anyone have suggestions for the build or what frame stiffening I should do for the vert.

My buddy thinks we can get 400RWHP, will the stock TPI and computer handle that much power?

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

you wont get near 400whp with STOCK TPI or modded TPI for that matter unless its a FIRST TPI setup or HEAVILY modded aftermarket base that flows over 275 CFM and heavily siamesed runners opened up to the max.

will need a tune, the computer will beable to handle that power with a tune.

definately do subframe connectors... 2 sets would be awesome but just alittle more expensive. else do a roll bar in the back, like a 6 point

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

Take the tpi and pitch it in the trash can. Do the 383 with AFR 195's, comp xfi 230/236, and miniram or stealthram. You should get about 375 RWHP with that and still be pretty mild.

I've got the alstons on my vert and they're okay. I think I'd do a perimeter mount set if I were to do it over though.

Kind of looks like 400hp is possibe, with the right setup maybe more, maybe the slp runners or port the stock ones? If that setup was getting 410 hp at the motor, what would that be at the wheels?

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

That was with dyno headers, no accessorys, no air cleaner and an electric water pump. That same engine in a car W/ accessories, water pump, air cleaner and exhaust would probably make 275-300 rwhp with an automatic.

Why would you not swap intakes and gain 100hp?

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

Maybe I was looking at the wrong thing but do the Stealth Rams cost 2500 to 3000. I think thats a bit much for 100 hp... But maybe I'm wrong I'll keep searching

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

My bad, that was the complete kit, so it would be like 600, that is more manageable. I was like man thats damn expensive for an intake! That is why I was hoping to use stock TPI

Thank you for the information!
Now I am definatley looking into the HSR, I didn't even know what it was before this post. I'm glad I asked!

yeah that was over 400 hp crank with a BIG cam thats way too big for TPI in general and no accessories

at the wheels on a good day that be around 330 whp. a FAR cry from 400whp.

Add accessories and you could lose 40-50hp...depends tho. I would think accessories will lose more like 30hp. IF you did full aftermarket TPI stuff, and made near 450hp on motor like they did in that mag test, that will still be around 410-420 on motor with accessories and only 350 at the wheels. NOT BAD but HSR would make another 30-40 more hp.

HSR is a better bet. Its what i'm using for my 383 ideas. I'm shooting for over 400whp

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

Yeah after searching more I am seeing that is the case.
When I first searched for HSR i saw 2900 bux and it scared me haha.
But now I see it can be had for 600 or so...

Do you have any suggestions on Auto or Stick?
I swapped a t-5 into my last RS, and it was fun! but it was stock... I am wondering if I'll need a stick shift to have fun in this one...I am guessing no matter what a engine with 400rwhp is gonna be a blast. I guess its all preference.

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

doesnt matter, its all persoanl preference to you. If you want a stick go T56 6 speed from the LT1 4th gens...its stronger than that weak T5. 700r4 auto can be built to handle that power and with a good torque converter, it will run good and launch easy/consistantly

Re: 383 TPI build for 91 Vert

First things first I have to build the bottom end, then I'll figure out what I want to do. I appreciate the input. I really like the way the TPI looks, Maybe I will get it honed and use some big runners like on that mag article...
