Waxing Conv. back window

When I recently had my 1992 RS Top replaced, the guy was teiing me about being careful not to scratch the plastic window as fine sand and dirt can sscratch it. I told him that I always keep it waxed so the sand slides right off of it. He looked at me like I was crazy and he had never heard of waxing it. I told him my windows stay clean & clear for over 7 years this way in the Florida sun. I thought I would pass along my thoughts to see if others did this also. Thanks Joe

Re: Waxing Conv. back window

It might help plastic deterioration if the wax has UV protectants in it, but otherwise I don't see it likely making any difference. Just like paint on a car, even when waxed, if you touch it with dust and grime on it, it can still scratch and damage the paint. You wouldn't want to treat the paint or a plastic rear window with any less care whether it has been waxed or not.
The key to keeping it clear and scratch free is the same as paint. You want to be able to lift and remove any particles of contamination before touching or treating it.

Re: Waxing Conv. back window

I've been looking for a product that will help keep the clarity and limit scratching and have never found anything that worked. I replaced my original top and window on my 91 about 3 years ago.

The new one is still in good shape but is starting to show scratch lines even though I carefully clean it regularly.

Has anyone tried the Rainex products for flexible vinyl like boat windows? I am probably going to give it a try but would like to hear from someone that has had some success with this or another product.

I've touched mine up with http://www.meguiars.com/?clear-plast...Cleaner-Polish and got pretty decent results.

Old fashioned Turtle wax paste does the trick. Once it is waxed the sand slides right off of it. You can run your finger over the plastic and it doesn't scratch. When you sponge wash the car, the sand slides right off and shows no scratches. Try it

BMW makes a cleaner just for the plastic windows on the back of their convertibles. I picked one up (expensive!!) But it works great.

Re: Waxing Conv. back window

Wax is what ruined my rear window on my top, but then again I was using some pretty good carnauba wax so that's a little different than the Turtle Wax. That crap cost me $400 to get a new top, but I enjoy the glass window very much.
