inside the trunk differences ???
i've seen some convertibles with the plastic sides like how the coupes have it but way shorter and then I see the ones that are Material type that have some sort of Velcro that hold them in place. Was that an option or something. My convert has the material type sides.
Re: inside the trunk differences ???
i was just about to post about this same exact thing cuz i have the material type and i have seen converts with plastic i hardly see eneyone with the material type...i was also wondering if eneyone knows if its easy to chang from material to plastic

I have an 88 and it has plastic just like the hardtops. What does this fabric look like?(pics) I had no idea there was any difference in the years.

The change was made with the 1991 model year AFAIK. My 90 has the modified coupe pieces.

Re: inside the trunk differences ???
I agree - '91 was the year the fabric was used and they ditched the plastic pieces including the locking compartment (probably saved cost). It was also the first year that the Pontiacs were offered as a factory option (coincidence?).
The fabric is just like the trunk liner of a coupe that has been heat formed in a mold and attached to other parts with velcro strips. Removing the plastic also provided a little more trunk space for the 'verts.

This is what was in my 91 when I bought it. Don't know if it is stock or not.

Does anyone know if the fin on the trunk is the same as a coupe? If I find a blue coupe can I just mount the fin right on my vert trunk?

They would be EASY to make, buy some Coupe rear panels, cut to fit...

Re: inside the trunk differences ???
Buy a set, then cut about 3 inches from where you think they should be cut, then try to fit them, work up on them until it is right.
The hard thing to find is the trim pieces on the panels that go where the hinges are. I think it is a standard generic piece. It actually appears to be very much like the hood trim piece on my CASE 222 Tractor...

Another thing that you could do is find some junkyard panels, like okfoz said, and then hook up with someone right close to where you live who has a complete 'vert - pull their panels and use them as guides for cutting your own so they'll fit better. . .

My 91 has the plastic sides. On the right side is the locking compartment and the RPO code sticker is on the inside of the compartment. Any other 91-91 have their RPO code shee there?

Re: inside the trunk differences ???
The best I can figure out is for 1991 Camaros VIN 77404 & later may have used the carpet, prior to that they had the plastic panel...
THat would place the changeover to the Carpeted panels to around March of 1991.
There is no reference to the 1991 or later Trans Am's using the Plastic panels. Does anyone know when the 91 Trans Am and Firebird convertibles started production?

and my RPO sticker since its inside the front compartment, A place that has LOTS of movement and junk shaking around in there, the sticker is kinda wasted.. but you can still see the vin and the Z28 code.

"to hell with this cutting fabricating panels.. lets just use speaker box material !!" cause thats what the material looks like.. Cheap stuff.. i would love the plastic panels and they would stay nice cause NO SUN would hit them either !! Joined: Sep 2000

Why not revive a seven year old thread?
Just curious if anyone had an extra set of the trunk carpet. I have the plastic pieces in my '92 T/A but would like to see how the carpet looked in the trunk. Might actually free up some space back there.

My '91 also has the fabric covers. It was built in June 1991.I'll be keeping them for originality, although there is a fair bit of waste space behind the drivers side cover, was thinking of using this space to house an amp or two and then hiding them with the fabric cover.

Re: inside the trunk differences ???
Just realized that I have a set of the carpet panels in the garage. There was a bunch of spare parts and such that was in the trunk of my T/A when I got it a few months ago. Most of the stuff I just tossed to the side of the garage. I remembered seeing the carpet panels but they were all rolled up. I assumed they were just for covering up the plastic pieces, as I've seen some thirdgens that have carpeted panels. Today I was clearing up some of the stuff when I realized that those pieces were the pieces pictured above.
So now my next question, what goes along the rear of the trunk if you have the carpet panels in instead of the plastic panels? Does the plastic panel stay there and just free float without being attached to any side supporting panels?

Re: inside the trunk differences ???
The center plastic stays even with the carpet, there were push pins used (in the holes) to help hold it in place. Also there are 2 lower tabs that keep it help in place.
