84 top replacement issues

my buddy got an 84 vert and it needs a new top. ive been looking online for weeks now. i decided after looking at the old top i can tackle it myself and save some money instead of taking it into a shop. heres my problem, 1aauto sells the stayfast top i want but i cannot find the back window for the 83-85 tops! would the 87 window or complete top fit or am i sol? im pulling out my hair here trying to get this fixed.

From what I was told,S&C was in Nevada. It was one of the companies outsourced to do the top conversions for Chevy.I'm not sure if they ID'd the cars anywhere so that you could easily tell. Someone on the board might know.

Re: 84 top replacement issues

I know that sometimes these companies put an ID tag somewhere on the car with the conversion companies name.I'd look around the door jam's and frame under the hood to see if there's anything. Also on the front bow of the convertible top, there may be a marking.

I also have an measurements file over here on all the different tops.If anyone would like a copy to see what's on their car, just shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll get it over to yah.

ASC was the only company that did conversions for Chevy starting in '87. Prior to '87, all conversions (there were quite a few done by many different companies including ASC) were independent and aftermarket. And if your ride is not an ASC design that uses the same roof as the '87-'92 design, then you will be lucky to find any parts at all (unless you score a donor car).

I would very interested to learn if there are any companies out there producing tops and parts for anything other than the '87-'92 ASC's. I haven't heard of any. There are companies that could custom make a replacement top for whatever type conversion you have, for the right $$$ of coarse.

I have about 5 different measurements over here for these cars. They're a little tricky.

Your top WILL need to be custom made. Please check the door jambs for a label. If you can find one (or look in the glovebox or in the old paperwork from the previous owner) I (we) might be able to help you find a ready-made top. Is the car a 2-seater? Does it have a back seat?

Please let me know what you find out. Can you post photos of the car?

Here is a list of known conversion companies for Camaros from '82-86:
National Coach Engineering, Steas Industries, Straman, Autodyne Corp, Coach Builders Ltd, American Custom Coachworks, John Greenwood, Hi-Line Kustoms, Duquet-Sawdy Inc., Auto Form Corp., ASC Inc., Matrix3, International Coach, Coach Conversions, Griffith, Buffalo Conversions.

I do not know who S&C is? In all my years of research, this is the first I've heard of that company. Anyone care to enlighten me on who S&C is??

Re: 84 top replacement issues

car had 4 seats. previous owner removed them because they rotted from the top leaking water on them. i can get pics of the frame itself if needed, i removed the old top to see if i could infact tackle the job myself. heres what the car/top looks like.

also... couldnt find anything regarding the maker of the top. no paper in the glove box, no stickers on the door jambs

Re: 84 top replacement issues

You will have to have a top custom made, any good upholstery shop should be able to get the material and create a new top for you... Keep in mind that you will want to give the upholstery shop as much information as possible, so I do not recommend go tearing into it unless you are sure you can finish it...

THAT is your best option, considering that there were about a dozen companies making conversions it is impossible to tell if there was consistency within each shop from car to car, let alone the consistency between one conversion company and another.

an ASC top will more than likely NOT work, I would almost bet on it, besides there were actually TWO tops offered on the ASC cars, the 1985 - 1988 and 1989 - 1992.. The early tops are 1" narrower or so. It should be noted that anyone reading this that the 1990 + ASC tops also incorperated a headliner.

John

Re: 84 top replacement issues

I'd have to agree with John on this application. It’s such an early one and without any markings on the car from a conversion company, I’m not sure who did this one.

A reputable local trim shop could take the measurements for you and make it. On that particular car that's what I'd suggest too.

Re: 84 top replacement issues

Honestly it is the only 3 piece rear window that I am aware of... I have never seen another like it.

I want to think the car was on ebay at one point...
