Underside of vert top

What should be on the underside of the vert top? Should it be rails and stuff. Looks like a sizzor gate. Should something be covering this? I am looking at getting a very rough vert and have never seen one. Also how do you open the top? I mean the back part.

Re: Underside of vert top

To open the back there is a latch in the back above the speaker. just pull it toward the front of the car. and i'm pretty sure the newer verts had headlines, from 90 on maybe, but im just guessing cause i have an 89 with no headliner

Re: Underside of vert top

My 91 has a headliner. If you get a new top do you have to keep the headliner or do the new vert tops have them? Ya, look for a lever on the inside of the tonneau cover on the driver side in the back. These are often broken. I have seen some verts where you have to fold the seats down and turn a pin underneath the tonneau cover to open in. There is also a electrical switch, generally on the console in between the window switches that pops the tonneau cover. Later models, I think 92 had then in the same spot as the release of the top in the back.

Re: Underside of vert top

You can buy a headliner for the 91-92 verts. But, you can use your old one if its in good condition. I just ordered a new top for my 91 with glass in the rear.

Can you put a headliner on an 88 vert with a new top?

As I understand, if it did not come with a headliner you cannot add one. Dont remember where I read it though.

Re: Underside of vert top

my 92 has a healiner. if the frame is similar on 89 and lower you could add a headliner.

there are a few pieces of metal that screw in that hold the headliner. I think I have pics. ill look and post em later.

That would be great, I look forward to see what I can do to improve the look.

When I had a new top installed on my 88 I was told by the shop that they could install a headliner in the car if I wanted one. So I would say its possible to have one installed.

Re: Underside of vert top

Pop the trunk & you can look where the roof goes and just turn the lever.

Re: Underside of vert top

It would look like this . . .

Older verts are rod operated. I believe from '88up they are cable like these pics of my '89. Either way the all work under the same principals. If you can't get it to open from the pull lever, then you might be able to just grab it by hand as Tonkatoy mentioned.
DO NOT pull the cotter type pin out! Just rotate it by turning the lever. This releases the roof pin. You might need to push the roof pin up when the lever is turned, or have someone lift the roof slightly to put a gentle pressure upward. It will then pop up.
Good luck.

PS; regarding the roof headliner. My '89 doesn't have one (to old by a year), but I don't miss it. I only ride my car when I can have the roof down, so I don't even notice I don't have one!

Re: Underside of vert top

That what I was getting ready to ask for, some pics. Thanks. Everything was missing from the underside of the cover, all it has is the stud that I poped open with a screw drive. I found all the parts and now I can see where they all go.

I'd love to see those pics. I've been trying to figure out if a headliner can be added to older verts. Like Yankee, I believe I read somewhere on the board that it can't be done but I can't find it and IIRC it was more an opinion than a statement. Maybe Lon can chime in since I'm pretty sure he knows the differences between older and newer frames.

I was looking through my classic industry catalog and they are selling a kit now. I think it was $149. You might chech that out.

Here's the headliner from Classic Industries
http://www.classicindustries.com/camaro/RCH91.html
I found this thread:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/conv...adliner-s.html
with the attached pics. It looks like the headliner loops into the frame bows and tucks under the trim piece at bow 1. I wonder how the loops work since there are also loops on the actual top material. Also, the pics don't show the rear so I can't tell how it goes in the back. I guess it probably ends in another loop. Also, from what I've been able to gather, the only difference between the early and late frames, is that the early frames are a couple inches narrower. So probably, a little upholstery work will get these headliner to work on the earlier models.
