Looks like you got a great find there, pick her up for a good deal?? That JY refinished is gonna bring that car to another level, perfect fit for that vert... Good luck with all your future plans!!
Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
Tony, I'm curious. Is this a 305/5-speed or 305/automatic? My '92 TA is a factory 305/5-speed and they are allegedly rare. Even if you have the auto, I'm sure you got a rare TA being a convertible and a JY one at that.

JT - My 91 TA convertible is a factory 305-5 speed car and is 1 of 120 built that year. Since convertible production was about the same in 92, I expect that there were about 120-150 built in that year as well. My info came from Pontiac via Jim M. at PHS.
By the way, nice purchase Tony! Where do you guys find these cars?????

I've posted this before, and although it is primarily about the 1LE, it does state the following:
That's not even speaking of convertibles.
However, I don't know where Hemmings, who wrote this article, got that information from.

Of the 1,643 Trans AMs built in 1992, just 94 were reportedly five-speed manuals...

JT -
I believe the number of Trans Am's for 1992 consists of 1643 Coupes plus 777 convertibles for a total of 2420. I don't know the number of 1992 5 speed cars. It could be 94 as stated in the article but that would mean no '92 convertibles had 5 speeds which is unlikely. Anyone else know the right number that includes convertibles?
Thanks for re-posting the article though. It was a good read. I think there may be another flaw in it though. It states that the HP rating was 230 while the "automatics" were only rated at 205. I think the 230 applies to the dual exhaust cars and the 205 is for the single exhaust versions. I don't believe it matters which transmission was installed. Do you know? The info I have gotten is not really clear about this.

Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
I have some PHS documentation and the 1643 Trans AM Coupes plus 777 Trans AM Convertibles to equal 2420 Trans AMs is what I also have.
The article, above, would seem to make the reader conclude there was only 1643 Trans AMs in total. A Trans AM Convertible and a Trans AM Hardtop/T-Top is still a Trans AM, of course. When they say there was 1,643 Trans AMs built in 1992, I would think it's logical to read that as Total Trans AMs and not one version over the other.

cool find Tony...
Now get to work on that thing and get it to the Trans Am Nationals... That and your SLP equipped 5 speed sitting there...
I still want a Yellow Firebird fest one year... It would be awesome to see 10 of those cars in one place at one time...

Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
I wouldn't call mine a performer either. Despite the 5.0 TPI/5-speed combo, it is missing WS6. It has the 3.08 gears.
Ours are two months apart in conversion from ASC.
Is yours a WS6?

The red car is not a Convertible, it is a hard top Formula... Actually it is a Firehawk Jr... There is a back story to the car that is quite interesting.

Tony, would you be able to post the SPID sticker?
There was some belief that WS6 wasn't available on the 1991-1992 TA Convertible:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...61-post62.html
Of all the 1991-1992 TA Convertibles I've seen, I've never seen one with WS6.

Nice! Doesn't look too rough just from the pics. Better shape than mine when I started! I too, own a 92 WS6 vert, with documentation. Mine is also a 5-speed/3.08 gears according to the SPID.

Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
JT - My 91 TA Vert is a valid WS6. It was on the RPO label and I am the only owner. I didn't think there was any restriction on the convertible suspensions available and WS6 was standard on the 91 TA's.
Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
Could you post a picture of your SPID? You can blank out the last digits if you wish. I'm not questioning you, but I've never seen one and some of (who I consider to be experts) question WS6 coming on the 1991-1992 Convertibles so a picture would make it official.

Here's mine. It's a bit faded, but if you look closely on the first vertical column, 4th one down you'll see WS6.

Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
My SPID is about the same legibility as Time Traveler'ss - but it definitely has the WS6 code on it. I will not post a picture since it adds nothing to the discussion.
I did, however, go back through my information and agree with okfoz, WS6 was not standard for the TA, F41 was. WS6 was available as an option and included the QLC Tires (P245/50ZR16 Gatorbacks) if it was selected as an option. I believe that most of these cars also included the GTA Leather seating (mine did and I bought it off the lot).
I also have a Sept 1990 Pontiac news release (#147) that clearly states that the WS6 was available as an upgrade including the tires although it's release date predates the introduction of the convertibles to the 1991 lineup. It is a 15 page document but I will scan it and send it attached to a PM if anyone wants it. Attached is just the page that speaks to the WS6 availability discussion.

JT,
Both the '91 T/A Convertible I own now as well as the other one I sold a couple of weeks ago were WS6's. I really didn't know it was that rare.

Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
I was looking at a 1992 TA convertible on eBay (just looking), and it had the AQ9 ("GTA seats") and I was under the logic that it would be more likely to have WS6. Interestingly, the SPID was posted and there was no WS6 on the "loaded" 1992 TA on eBay.
My 1992 TA convertible came with the factory CD player, but no AQ9 or WS6. Of all the 1992 TA convertibles that pop up, I've never seen one with WS6 which made me suspect John's speculation of WS6 not coming equipped on the TA convertible may have been correct, and that my car may not have been missing the options I thought it was. Unfortunately, it appears this is not the case.
I would like to see a 1991-1992 TA convertible's SPID sticker posted with WS6. TimeTraveller, thanks for your SPID sticker and the effort, but that paper looks like it's been through the wash machine inside someone's pocket a few times!

Here ya go. This is the SPID for the car I sold a couple of weeks ago. The car I still own is exactly the same except it has leather interior. The VIN's were only about 800 cars apart.
Re: I bought sumthng silly on SAT
Simply for documentation purposes, here's the tag from my '91 vert with AQ9 and WS6. Interesting discussion by the way, I bought this car a few months ago after a 10 year drought of F-body ownership.

Here is the SPID from the '91 T/A Convertible I still own. With my two, one from TimeTraveller, one from tavert'91, one from baileydogg, and one from Tony Walch, that makes six WS6 convertibles. As I said earlier, I didn't know that they were that rare. This is a very interesting discussion indeed.

Yeah I think that should put to rest the notion that 91-92 T/A verts were unavailable w/WS6.

Agreed,
I am always learning on this site, it is always exciting to learn that you were wrong, it makes me a stronger, more knowledgable person thats for sure...
Now how about performance axles... Does anyone have a factory 3.42 or 3.27 rear axle in a TA Vert or are they all 3.08's and 2.73's???

Nothing silly about buying a 3rd gen. Good find. I plan to start a collection of 3rd & 4th gens.

Thanks!
