Movie cars, famous cars, etc. I thought it was a general discussion about famous cars including the Simon and Simon Camaro and the cool Targa option it had. Sorry if I was wrong.

Re: '82 Z28 convertible on old tv show Simon & Simon
I remember seeing a 89 or 90 Iroc in the Stephen King movie "it" The guy who was the judge on the sitcom "night court" was the owner in the movie. There was a blue Iroc in the Patrick Swayze movie Black Dog or something like that. It was a truck driving movie where Meat Loaf was the bad guy trying to steal his load. In the second Beverly Hills Cop "Eddie Murphy" there is a black 86 Iroc.
also, i want to either do this to my car, or get the simon and simon one, loved that show and magnut lol

also i believe that the "weird subframe connectors" in the poster who was talking about his aunts car, are there for more rigidity as the car is similar to a ttop car which i know they had bracing in the rocers for added strength being that they were missing a roof pretty much, sorry to double post

Re: '82 Z28 convertible on old tv show Simon & Simon
I never Liked Simon&Simon, mainly AJs Character,( Smug Arrogant College Type Mr know it all Jock ) I watched 1 or 2 episodes of the show aside from the crossover they did on Magnum P.I. which is a show I did like, but for different reasons, My Favorite show was The Rockford Files and I always felt that if it hadn't been for The Rockford Files Magnum P.I. never would have been, Because when James Garner was forced to stop shooting because of his Bad knees that had swollen up and forced him to get his weight off them by sitting down and universal sued for breach of contract and the show was Killed in Early 1980 around January or February, then Universal wanted to do a new show that was similar to the Rockford Files, and thats when they came with the idea for Magnum ( P.I. ) <-- like Rockford, with some tweaks here and there such as, Magnum is a Lucky SOB who Lives on a rich man's estate for free ( Robin Masters) and Drives a Hot car too (like On Rockford) except the car is a Hot Red ( then 60,000 dollar ) Ferrari, and He's a P.I. only Young handsome and Chicks Dig him, who do we know like that ? So the Executives thought about Tom Selleck who had Played a Cool New P.I. on Rockford who was Cool with Women and The Jealous Rage of Rockford easily Noticed @ Lance White <--( Tom Sellecks P.I. Character on the Rockford Files Before Magnum, from where I believe Led to his consideration to be the Lead Thomas Magnum in the show that would be created when Rockford ended because the Execs or Casting Agents at Universal had seen Selleck on Rockford) the Rockford Files ended in January of 1980, by December of 1980 The 2- Episode Pilot of Magnum was Airing, Coincidence ? Absolutely not, Universal Canceled The Rockford Files but still wanted to have a similar P.I. type show because Rockford was a 6-year success and out of it came the idea for Magnum P.I. only this time not in L.a. but in Hawaii and it took them from January / February of 1980 to November of 1980 to Finish Creating the Pilot for Magnum so that it could Air in December of '80 and Universal would have their Rockford replacement in Place and Continue Making them Money with the P.I. Genre Thru Magnum who would be an 8-year Success, but to people like myself that Truly Know how the story goes and how Things went down, Rockford/James Garner will always be THE P.I. that Started it for guys like Selleck to Be famous, Simon&Simon.

I can't believe I never seen this post. I did a targa conversion on one of my old cars. Made a top out of 2 lexan t-tops hacked up and refiberglassed.
Then ended up buying a totaled vert for parts and converted it to a vert. I kinda wish I would have keep the Targa top car.

Still Cool Re: '82 Z28 convertible on old tv show Simon & Simon
Not to Bring Rain on this parade of the Targa Camaro which looks Cool and Definitely Unique in its own way, but after seeing the Red 1979 Ferrari 308 GTS from Magnum P.I. in the Pilot Episode with the removable Roof, and then afterwards you see the red targa Camaro it makes you think that they tried a Similar thing to the Magnum Ferrari with a Camaro and it makes it look like an attempted ripoff.
Still Cool
Still CoolThese targas are good looking and distinctive. Considering they cost 1/3rd the price of a Ferrari, I would say they were a great option when new. ....and I don't even own one.

Re: '82 Z28 convertible on old tv show Simon & Simon
I was watching a DVD from a Old TV show called Simon & Simon, which is from the early '80's, In the show the Private detectives drive a '82 Z28 that at first looks like a t-top car that the center bar was removed, when they have the top on it looks like a soft top, the car also has a band that runs behind the side window and over the roof, there is a logo on the band, but they don't get close enough that you can read it, does anyone know who did the conversion on these? the show takes place in San Diego, so maybe it was a southern California company? ... Hi I built and sold these two cars for the Simon & Simon show I was the GM for a Chevrolet Dealer in Wayne NJ and was doing Monte CARLO convertibles at the time The cars came with a removable soft top pretty neat i did two cars one was a true Z28 the back up was a plain Camaro with bolt on Z28 parts
Thanks for responding sil carioti. What was your company's name? I always thought the Simon & Simon carlooked like a Westwind/Magnum conversion. Was your company connected to Westwind/Magnum?... or did you use asimilar targa kit or did you custom build every part of the conversion? I would love to see photos of some of theMontes you converted. I have beenresearching coach convertibles for a long time and the Simon & Simon carshave been a mystery to me.

Re: '82 Z28 convertible on old tv show Simon & Simon
Hi everyone, I am hoping to provide some information about the cars used on Simon and Simon. The early cars were made by “Cruise Air” and are identified by a very wide band over the back part of the opening in the roof (AKA B piller/roof). The later cars were made in North Hollywood by “Targa Top.” Targa Top modified Camero, Firebirds, Fiero, and Mazda RX7 vehicles as a dealer option and limited direct consumer sales. The company was featured in “Kit Car” magazine and I am one of the people featured in the magazine. The cars were made from Coupe vehicles (without T-top). It was a challenge to reinforce the vehicle after removing the structure of the roof. Steel plate was welded inside along the rocker panels and 1x3 steel tubing was welded under the floor. Steel rod was put in the A pillar prior to the new trim for the opening. Final shim and latch adjust fitted the new Targa Top. The Targa Top vehicle is identified by a very thin rear moulding and a hard shell top.
