Sounds like the plastic guides or gear are going bad. Mine went bad years ago. Had to relocate the latch motor to fully close the trunk.

Is there any height adjustment available via the motor mounting screws? Sometimes the motor mechanism will shift slightly over the years of used, just like a hood latch.

Definitely sounds like those fiberglass guides are shot, give them a call. They have them!
