Looking for recommendations on where to put subwoofer(s) in my 1992 RS Convertible. Trunk? Behind the seats? Other?
Seems like a sub in the trunk would have a lot of rattle.
Not looking to rattle windows from a mile away, but looking for something with a bit of bass that will sound clean.
I recently replaced an older headunit (not factory) with this: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KMB...MM-BT328U.html
I replaced the factory dash speakers with Kenwood 4x6: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KFC...KFC-4675C.html
And the factory rear with Kenwood 5 1/4" https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KFC...134.html?cc=07 (I tried to use 6.5" but they didnt fit the housing right and I wasn't going to start cutting stuff).
The sound is better. It's clean and the highs and mids sound WAAAYYY better than before. But would like a bit more bass.
The trunk of the third GEN is the ideal location for a sub woofer. Unless you’re able to fit 15 inch subs in there I wouldn’t be too concerned about rattles. The hatchback’s are ideal and are very loud. The convertible poses another challenge, as with the top down it tends to absorb a lot of the bass from the trunk. I first had an 8 inch bazooka style sub and it was OK when the top was up but I could barely hear it while driving. I then built a box for a single 12 inch alpine sub which sounds much better. The issue with the convertible is designing the box to not only fit in the wheel well but getting it in through the trunk opening. The weird angle of the trunk lid prevents a normal hatch style box from sliding right in. Also, the welded trunk support braces also get in the way. I designed my box for the top of the box to fit on the well “ledge”. You have to measure and test fit over and over and over again to see if it’ll fit. Single 12 inch sub just barely fits facing straight upward. 2 10s might fit a lot better, but in reality I figure with the displacement of the sub there’s only about .6 ft.³ in the well. Bazooka makes a 10 or 12 inch powered sub that might fit really nice in the well and do what you want to do without too much installation pain. Plus, it can easily be removed if needed.
I got tied up and haven't done anything on this yet. I just picked up (for free) 2 rockford fosgate punch 10" speakers in a sealed box. It "kinda" fits in the trunk, but I might try to find a box that fits cleaner. Any recommendations?
Do I want a sealed or ported box?
Those (2) 10" subs will work fine if you are crafty enough to build a box. Again, with the support brackets in the trunk of the vert it makes building and fitting a box that much more difficult - unless you remove the trunk lid.....as for sealed vs porting, unless you have computer program that can tell you the exact dimensions of the ports needs for your particular subs I wouldn't even bother. For that reason I always go with a sealed box.
