Hawks just told me the 1989 has a one year only convertible top.

is that true?

everything i've seen said 87-92 are the same...

the top i bought from topsonline said 87-92...

hope somebody can shed some light on this subject and IF 1989 is a one year only ASC Top, what are the differences from the rest of the 87-92 tops?

I'm here because I have an '89 IROC Z Vert, too.

 

I think the '87 top is a one year only.

 

there are 3 different top frames.
87
88-89
90-92

You need to take measurements of your top to make sure you order the correct top for your frame.

in a old related thread here it says the following with no more detsils...

There Are At least 3 different style tops for third gens:
87-88 (slider Tonneau release 87-88 front bow and window)
89 (handle Tonneau release 89 front bow and window)
90-92 (handle Tonneau release 90-92 front bow and window

really having trouble finding out what exactly the specific differences are...

with my ongoing challenges with weatherstripping not being cut at the correct angle it sppears that 1. The weatherstripping for over the windows is not the same for 87-92 like topsonline and others indicate. 2. The angle of rotation for the top side window rails that the weatherstripping slides into is different for 87-92. 3. The weatherstripping manufacturers all knocked off one year between 87-92 and called it good for 87-92. 4. I may not have a 1989 Convertible top frame on my 89 rs vert or it may be some hodgepodge of 1987-1992 vert top frame parts. 5. I may need to get custom made weatherstripping for my top window roof rails a little longer than what I have and just sand the angles I need to make it work. I have no idea who can do that or how much it would cost. I know it can be done because FantomWorks had it done for a 63 corvette split window they were customizing on the tv show on cable sone time back.

this is currently my best guess based on what i'm seeing with my 1989 vet.

It'd sure be useful to know WHAT is different between 87-92 convertible top frames and weatherstripping, not just that they're different.

Pictures of the differences side by side would be awesome.

I believe 87-88 are usually mostly the same

89 is a 1-year
different bow trim, tonneau release, smaller window, different header and latches
They made a lot so there’s still reproduction trim pieces for 89

90-92 is slightly different. Different bow trim, different window, different header and latches

apparently if you’re ordering a top they may have switched styles mid-year so you really need to measure and confirm for the fabric.

I've never found and aftermarket top with white stitching, like the factory/ASC ones had.

 

The convertible top guys I quoted might be able to do it… I believe you can pay extra and they consider it custom but if you talk to them they might be able to…
