How many of us have electric trunk releases?
Please specify make and year. Thanks.
Edit: Oh yeah. Yes or no?

None of us have electric trunk releases. This function has been diverted to the tonneau release solenoids. The trunk pulldown mechanism still functions as such, you just can't "pop it open" with the console switch, only with the trunk key.

So does the mechanism that is there serve to release the trunklid? If you supplied power to it would it pop the trunk? The only reason I think they didn't wire up a switch for it was so that you wouldn't accidentally pop the trunk while the tonneau cover was up. I just was thinking how it's wierd that it is there, but not hooked up. Maybe put in before it went to ASC? Otherwise why would they waste the parts? GM is cheap and I'm sure they would try to save dollars everywhere they could.

That explains why I couldn't find the button to pop the trunk when I was looking at this convertible I might be getting. Hey, what are the bad things about having a convertible? Oh yeah, where do I find the rpo codes? Are those all the #'s and letters inside the middle console box?
Thanks

Yup those are the RPO codes. Just make sure you invest in a set of Sub-frame connectors.

The trunk motor is the same, so in theory you could make it release the trunk. I saw a 91 TA convertible with the tonneau release on the tonneau itself right by the driver side door (great idea). It had the trunk release in the center where it normally is. The switch itself is different than the normal release(as far as I know) but the real switch is easy to get. Since they started as coupes, they should have the wiring running through the car(but GM is cheap so...

Have fun finding a strong set that fit the convertibles. I was unimpressed with the ones available, although I maybe forced to choose. Chassis flex is the worst and it causes numerous squeeks and cowl shake (mine does, don't know about others).

Bad things about having a convertible
- flexable flyers
- not given the best motor
- weighs over 2 ton with a normal person and a full tank of gas
- Hard to find parts(they're always the ones that break
- tendancy to squeek more than most
- People staring at your car and not paying attention to the road, creating a hazard for you and others around
- People liking the car, staring at the car
- Knowing you are 1 of the few, the proud, the 3rdgen convertible owners

- Having people on this site drool over your car
- Being able to show off and look good doing it
- Looks good, even when in bad shape(with top down only)
- People don't expect it to be fast b/c its an overweight convertible
- Almost Everyone Wants One

Yea, like Willie said, they rerouted it to the tonneau solenoid when it is in the center console. I knew it was there, like I said, just wondering why they would install it and not have it functional? Waste of materials is not real smart. I have a switch out of a coupe, maybe when I reupholster the sunfaded interior (not now, but when it gets bad enough) I'll wire it up. Not like anyone uses their trunk much in a vert (can't fit shiet in there).
BTW, I have the custom cloth (forget the exact name) the thin black and white stripe cloth. Can the original material be bought to reupholster the seats? I don't want to go leather, and the door panels don't need it.
Anybody know if anyone carries this pattern?

In 91 they moved the tonneau switch to the tonneau vice the console. My 92Z28 has it there and it's much more convient then my 89 RS which is on the console. I doubt you could get the release to function properly. On a hard top, when you pop the hatch, the angle on the gas struts is such it will hold the hatch up slightly so the pull down does not re-engage. The angle is so short on a convertible trunk I think the lid would drop and me pulled down as soon as the pull down motor cycled. I could be wrong though...

I have a trunk release in addition to the tonneau release. But only because I added the solenoid and wiring from a coupe. I installed a release switch from a Caprice inside the center console along with the light that lit it's glove compartment.

I have a 1990 Convertible, and I was thinking about installing a trunk release switch where I believe the Rear defrost button would normally be on the coupes(Bottom right of instrument surround). There is just a bare plastic panel in there now and it looks like the trunk release button would fit nicely.Do you guys think this would work?

Weird, so the rest of you vert guys have an electric pulldown on your trunks...mine doesn't.

I added it to mine. I bought the solenoid from GM, and wired it. I have the release button on my key chain only so if some one get's in the car, they won't get to the trunk. You could also wire it so the switch was powered when it had the key on.
