t/a overheats, big surprise

well go figure, while driving to get the car registered, the t/a overheated/boiled over thrue the cap on the expantion tank. its still hot know so i didnt bother with seeing if the hoses collapsed or anything. it seemed that the car got hotter while moving but temps didnt drop while at the red lights. i had the heat on and that didint seem to help (TG i have t-tops!) on the end of a ten mile trip, temps went rite to the red line on the guage. i'm wondering if the rad cap is just letting pressure blead into the expantion tank too early for the functions of pressure to keep the temps down, i'm going to check for an air dam and try to use the cap off of my '79.
in the mean time, i mite as well check to see if water's circulating.

well, the air dam was in place, and i believe the water pump works(swirling coolant while egngine idled) there where no bubbles or oil in the coolant and the lower rad hose did not colapse. the engine got hot after again after some hard driving but we didnt let it get past 230, i don't believ that its the rad cap. my ford guy noticed that before we had started the engine (cold), the upper hose did not have any pressure when squeezed, then there was pressure while the engine ran wich i guess is expected. the kicker was even after the engine was ran till hot or even long after shutdown (long enogh to open the rad cap) the upper hose still had pressure on it, in other words, ford kid believes that it may bethe stat stuck close or a big restriction in the system, any thoughts?

DD,

Sorry I didn't get your PM sooner or I would have moved the topic from Tech to here.

I'd suggest starting with a new or known-good radiator cap. The lack of pressure is a key.

i have a qusetion, how exactly do i go about removing the thermostat? i pulled the intake, upper rad hose, throttle body warming hose and pulled the fuel lines, i still cant get to the thermostat housing bolt that is closer to the front of the car, is there a special tool i need or do i have to remove the throttle body completly so i can use a ratchet?
