Radiator relocate to trunk.

Has anyone done this? I was thinking of doing this for extra room upfront for twin turbos with twin intercoolers. looks like the radiator will fit. I have a serious idea of how to do this and it's pretty well thought out. my only concern is being able to get the water to flow from the front, to the back, to the front. Tell me reasons why it probably won't work so I can try to find holes and solutions before I start the install. Opinons are good. Thanks

Ryan

Aside from the lack of natural airflow (as a frontal radiator would get), I don't see a big issue, Fiero's did this in an opposite manner (rad. up front & rear engine).

There's more than enough room in front of the radiator though for an intercooler if you so feel the need to save yourself the labor. But, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. .

If you are absolutely certain you want to do this, go about it slowly. You better have something else to drive daily too, becouse your car will be out of commision for awhile.Relocating the radiator to the trunk???Okay. My opinion would be to move it farther fowards in the engine compartment. Mount it like a hummer radiator. At a 40-50 degree angle. that would in fact sove alot of time and money. But if your set on putting it in the trunk, then I'd run my coolant lines down the same path as the gas and brake lines. You'll have to mount a fan infront of it. And that willl be annoying inside the car going down the road, hearing a fan kick on almost constantly.Welp, good luck with whatever you decide to do, but'd think about leaving it under the hood.

The idea is great, but actually making it is going to drive you crazy. However, if you really think you want it, two cars that i would suggest looking at. The tucker and the gt40. The tucker had a grill in the back of the car just behind the radiator. This allowed heat to go directly out of the car instead of surrounding the engine bay. The GT40 had a radiator in the front, but the engine was in the back. This meant plumbing several feet of coolant lines to the front. Something you will have to do to the back of the car. I'm sure there is other cars. I picked these two cars for their popularity. Which it would probably be easier to find pictures and schematics of the cars.

One more thing. It would probably be easier to make tubes or a sheet metal barrier in front of the engine that directs heat out an opening in the hood. This is how the gt40 expels heat (pic below). You could use the side vents off a 78-81 camaro to expel the heat out the hood. I did this on my brothers s-10. The vents were situated over the headers.

Willie (History forum moderator) is in the process of fabbing a dual intercooler setup, which he says should be completed Friday. He has retained his radiator in the stock position, so maybe he could be a source of help for you should you decide not to relocate it.

This may not be of much consequence, but the DeLorean DMC-12 had a rear engine and front rad. Most of the pipework was metal, with a few rubber "boots" to change angles. Go to projectmadness.com (my friend's site) and see what you can find out about routing the pipes and stuff
