A/C cooling problems

Hi there,

Just got my A/C fixed (compressor blown), and got everything together when the hot weather hit, but I've run into another difficulty. It seems that when I use my A/C, fans come on, and keep running, so that rules out the fan relay, but the heat builds up enough that my speedometer stops working (85 Camaro Berlinetta, Digital dash, 2.8 V-6). Problem is, when I don't use that A/C, the car doesn't overheat, and the speedometer doesn't go out. Also, the fans come on as normal as well with the A/C off.

Any reccomendations?.... still trying to puzzle this one out, Fan switch?.... new Fan?.... air dam is on, 50/50 coolant, and this problem didn't start until my A/C died.

Thanks in advance.

The fan(s) is(are) suppposed to come on with the A/C, that's normal.
The digital dash part.. (this is only a wild guess) might be caused by a weak alternator.
When the fans come on & the compressor is running, the voltage might be dropping as the alt get hot, just enough that the dash turns off (assuming the dig. dash has to stay with X voltage to stay on). It's an 'out on a limb' guess but, I don't know squat about dig. dashes.

My interior lights used to go out when i turned on my headlights at night. Goodyear ran a test and said it was something in the instrument panel.
if you have a good sound system , it might be over working your alternator. good luck.

Well, after trying out a few things, (new rad cap, fan motor, and ducting more air into the rad by channeling the airflow through the airdam), I was able to get my temps a little lower.

However, my speedometer still goes out. Checked with a place I know that only fixes sensors, seems that the VSS controls input from the tranny to the speedometer, so it's either fried, or it has heat sensitivity in the high temps we are currently experiencing. I'm getting the tranny flushed and serviced this morning, and the VSS sensor changed. I'll also get them to look at the wiring in case it's stripped or burned (who knows what it has touched down there).

I'll let you know how it goes.
