Bad heatsoak
I just had a new motor put in with headers. I put in a new starter new cables and a new battery. When it heats up it cranks over very slow. Last night I wrapped the starter in insulation and moved the solinoid to a cooler location. Today the problem was worse. I used 10 guage wire to go from the solinoid to the starter (per instructions). Should I use a battery cable? Too much loss with the 10 guage? My battery has 750cca should I get 900-1000cca battery or is 750 OK? Any one have this problem? Any sugesstions?
Thanks
David

I just changed the 10 guage wire from the solnoid to the starter with a 4 guage cable. Its better but will still not start when its hot. Is my new starter no good? Its a rebuild from Advance Auto.
Will I be able to remove the starter without removing my Y pipe?
I am going to try a 1000 CCA battery tonight just because its easy.

I had that problem w/ my headers and I kept cooking the rebuilt autozone starters I was using. Its a PITA when your driving from NC to MA and somewhere in VA you cook a starter.
You can change the starters w/o dropping the Y pipe, buts it sucks, I'd just pull it. I know its bad on a car w/ headers to do, but it'll save you a lot of frustration.
I finally solved the problem by just buying a Holley heat shield from a local performance shop. I never thought the thing would work its just a piece of insulation sandwiched between two pieces of aluminum, but I haven't had a problem at all. WHats better is I don't have to relocate the solenoid or run heavier wire or do anything like that. It cranks over w/o a worry now.
Good luck,
Mike
