factory wiring basic question 89 firebird gta
working through wiring issues...
the usual hack job plus ...
lots of bad crimps, chopped wires, etc... the best was the main red power wire from the brick in the firewall was cut off flush, that wire had two corroded crimps, and it was fed unprotected through a hole in the firewall where there was a mechanical hood lock...and it chaffed and turned green... I thought fixing that was going to do it all, but not even close
the other issues too numerous to list, but so far my count is 22 bad crimps or connections which I've since cut out as many as possible and soldered in new wire... I've opened up every wire harness in the engine bay (except the big one that tucks in back)...
I've seen and replaced several of these which were very corroded:

what looks like a factory crimp of wires
wrapped in what seems like black duct tape
*****************************************
I found three on the drivers side and now another on the passenger side for the orange main wire for the fans, which is also well corroded and the tape was mostly disintegrated.
I also saw a couple more under the dash near the ECM that weren't corroded, so I left them there, but that made me think it was a factory install.

Was it a bad idea to replace by soldering and just tape?
