Fan wont turn on, tried everything... help!
Fan wont turn on, tried everything... help!
I overheated the other day and narrowed it down to the fan never turning on. My 90' Camaro v8 (305 mostly stock) has a single fan. I replaced the motor, the relay, the engine link switch, the thermostat, and even the fan blade (it was warped almost oval shaped).
It never turns on. I did the jumper test on the motor to see if it was defective, it wasnt b/c it turned on when i hooked it direct to battery.
I'm about to install a new water pump (i already checked it, no leaks or dribbling at the spout; and also checked by holding the top rad' hose and it did feel week but seemed to be pumping). Is there anything else it could be?
Oh, and my needles are floating so I cant test how hot it's running, only the rpm and gas needles sort of work, the battery stays constant and the heat is always dead.
Any help greatly appreciated!

same thing happened to mine. i just wired in a manual switch, but i am thinking about putting a fan switch in the head and rewiring it during the engine swap
Manual turn on/off switch
I was thinking of making a temporary bypass by taking the switch off the fan motor and taping it down to the body. Then, I will run a ground wire to body with a slip on crimp and some 10-14 guage speaker wire.
And finally slip on another crimp w/ wire to the positive terminal to the + battery terminal and just slip it on when I need to drive.
My question... how long can I run it this way (the ground wire sparks when it moves and gets hot too) and will it be okay to drive around an hour or so with this setup or will it still overheat?
Thanks,
Jm

if u have replaced the relay, and fan motor, and the checked the fusable link.. that and check your wiring harness to double check that your wiring isn't bad.. thats where it sounds like the problem is...

here's something new
When I replaced the cooling fan switch and did the bypass test I heard a clicking at the relay switch. It wouldn't turn on, but when I kept grounding it I'd hear a 'click' at the relay.
As for right now I threw a 10 guage (maybe 8, was pretty thick) wire grounding the fan motor, and another (same guage) with a 30amp inline fuse to the battery directly. I just plug it in when I need to drive around. I don't have a multimeter to do wire testing (and don't know the right readings to test anyway) so I'll have to end up taking it in.
