A new kind of orifice tube

I'm not sure that is how you spell it...but I took my car in to have the AC rebuilt.....the compressor blew.....and the guy told me that for an extra 20 bucks they have a new kind of orifice tube (also called a variable orifice tube) that gets the temp inside the car from 10 to 15 degrees cooler. I said what the hey and went for it. Anybody heard of one of these newfangled thingies?

Yeah, my father just ordered a couple to test them. 15-20 degrees cooler is a little optimistic though. The 134a cars blow in the ~45* range, so the best you can expect is 5-8* cooler. Where you will notice a benefit is that the temperature won't fluctuate so much between idle and crusing speed.

How much did it cost to get the AC rebuilt?

cool...that sounds good enough for me.

the cost is still up in the air....but he quoted me 720. that's for 240 in labor charges, 50 accumulator, 25 tube, 300 compressor.

Everything is brand new so he's not going to use the remanufactured crap.

Thanks for letting me know the heads-up on the orifice tube.

I think i know what your talkin about. In the field we use a similar version, its called a thermostatic expansion valve. Not a bad idea, less chance of clogging, and on some i work with they're adjustable. They work good at keeping the low pressure stable and it will keep the compressor from cycling. Older cars use the same design.

Man is my AC COLD!

Props goes to College Auto of Fayetteville, AR. They did some terrific work on this car and even showed me a caddie he's restoring in the back.

The new orifice tube seems to me to be a great invention. I turn on the AC and the AC gets cold really fast. It used to take at least 45 seconds of blowing to get ice cold. This is like 10 seconds with Arctic winds blowing out on the low level. I can't wait until I use the high setting on Max. It's gonna make all my passengers all nipply.... :lala:
