Thermostat and high temperature
Thermostat and high temperature
I was about to buy a 1992 Trans-Am GTA, but it got couple of problems so I changed my mind about it... Ok the owner told me the temperature goes high and he changed the radiator, but still it goes high. He said he might remove the thermostat from the car.
My question: Is that good or not? And how would you fix it if it were in your car?
deadbird told me it's not a real soultion to the problem, it's just a band aid.
Note: I didn't change my mind only because of that. It got more problems.
Thanks

Depends on what is high. These cars depending on ambient air temp will run anywhere from 200-230 degrees before the electric fans turn on. Many overheating problems are caused by bad fan relays causing the cooling fan(s) not to come on. Some models have two fans, some one. Usually the problem can be corrected fairly easily by some troubleshooting.
When I said it go high I didn't mean the normal range, but I mean it reaches the red line... in normal range I don't think it's a problem.
I don't know how many fans that GTA got, but I think 2 dunno?

usually overheating on the highway is from a missing or messed up airdam..
overheating during traffic is usual caused by the fan(s) not coming on when they are supposed to..
also could be a clog in the cooling system like around the heatercore.
i have had three thirdgen's all mostly stock with 350 tpi's with dual fans and the normal temp was about 220 according to the fan guages..

Also, check to make sure the timing is correct, and that the lower radiator hose isn't collapsing under load.
And make sure the gauge is accurate, they're known not to be.

Wouldn't removing the thermostat actually be quite counterproductive? If I understand right, that would cause the water/coolant to constantly circulate through the system, without being in the radiator long enough to really cool down much.... right?
