overheating but why?????

Alright I have a 92 camaro RS with tuned port injection 305 in it. The intire cooling system is stock exept for the 160* stat and a manuel fan switch. The engine runs fine and cool when it is cool outside like at night. But when its hot out and in traffic I will turn the fan on at about 220 and it will just stay there the temp never goes down untill i hit an open stretch and go about 50 mph for about 5-10min then it cools right down to like 160. Is the problem in my fan? I have tuned port but still have the stock single fan setup. Should I get a more powerful fan like a 2200cfm or what else could I do to help it cool a little better. Ive heard a 70-30 coolant mix is good. but is it 70%coolant or 70%water???

It's 70% water because water absorbs heat better than Antifreeze. Anti freeze just raises the boiling point of the coolant mixture. When you're stuck in traffic on a hot day (100* or over), the only thing that will help the engine run cooler (about 225*) is to get a pair of high flow dual fans and a dual 1" core Aluminum Radiator. In non moving traffic on a 100* day, the only airflow will be from the Fans and the Aluminum Radiator will really help to dissipate the heat from the water. I have two 12" high flow Perma Cool electric fans that flow 1650 cfm each and a Stewart Stage 1 water pump with a 180* thermostat and with the AC on and sitting in stopped traffic on a 100* day, the engine gauge reads 240*-250* depending on how long I'm sitting in traffic. The next improvement will be the Griffin dual 1" core Aluminum Radiator for $189 from Summit. When I'm on the freeway the tempurature drops down to 190* on my "91" 305 tbi.

You must live in nor cal to be seein those temps. I dont understand Its all stock though shouldnt just a fan upgrade do the trick. Well i have headers and **** but that should not do to much to the cooling properties should it? I was also wondering what is the biggest single fan you can fit on a stock thirdgen radiator>>???

I just re-read your post and you said that the temp gets to 220* and stays there with the fan on, 220* is the Normal operating temperature of your engine. The engineers designed the 305-350 TPI and TBI engines to run this hot for emission purposes. Headers do make the engine compartment a lot hotter but, if it's only getting to 220*, your engine is running normal. I would also change the thermostat to a 180* and drill two 1/8" holes in the flange to purge air from the system and allow a slight amount of coolant to keep flowing through the system to prevent hot spots. The biggest fan you could use is a 16". The highest cfm 16" fan I've found is from Perma Cool (2950 cfm) which I bought but decided to use the two 12" fans instead because they cover more surface area of the radiator.

With a 160* thermostat you need to change the settings in the prom to make the primary fan come on at an earlier temperature. Right now your primary fan is coming on at 195* You have the problem like I sort of do. My primary fan has been changed to go on with the 160* thermo but I don't have a manual fan switch so only one fan is running which lets the cars temperature go to about 210. Now I need to figure out how to properly put on a manual fan switch for my secondary fan.

Thank you very much I think you guys might have just solved the problem. I will put a 180* stat in and start lookin for a fan on ebay. Has anybody put a forth gen fan assembely in thier thirdgen and were there any major modifications that had to be done to the engine bay or fan assembely??? and do you still have that 16in perma cool fan>>?? that thing would hit the spot i got the fealing.

For an emissions car 220* is fine.

Keep a 50/50 coolant mix.

Why not get a lower temp. fan switch, which turns the fan on at around 195 deg. or even 180 deg.?

Yes, I still have the 16" Perma Cool fan but, Dual fans are really more efficient.

Do you wanna sell that fan to me??? I dont want dual fans really. I dont think that it needs it. I have an electrical leak somewhere and I think its robbing preciouse amperage from my fan. If I fix that and the t-stat the problem might just go away. At least I hope.
