Fan switch question..........

Im thinking of going with the Hypertech fan switch. You hook the wireing harness right into the existing wiring, and screw the other part if it into the engine block(i think anyways). My question is they make it 2 ways....comes on at 176-and off at 166. Or, comes on at 200 and off at 185. Which one should i go with. I already have a 160" t-stat, and want to try and get the 2 comparable.

If my info is correct you probably have dual fans? if so remember, the fan switch controls the secondary fan in dual fan arrangements and by lowering the turn on if the sec fan comes on before the pri BOTH will come on as the ECM defaults. The closer the fan turn on is to stat temp the more the fan(s) will cycle. This has a negative effect of shortening the fan motor life, and you will probably have to replace the alt every other year. I would go with the higher of the two, that way you will have a longer period of time before the fans operate. In summer even with a 160 its going to run hotter than that and with the lower switch the fans will run continuously. NAPA has 2 diff temp fan switches, one at the stock 238 and a lower one. You might look into that and they cost only 19 bucks.

Danno, what degree thermostat do you recommend if someone (like me) already has one of these switches? What you say is correct, both my fans are coming on together, I would prefer one fan to come on and the other one later, but not at 238. Now both my fans run all of the time, but the car stays cool. I havn't changed the thermostat yet so I really have no idea what degree it is. Thanks.

If its stock Ben, your primary is controlled by the ECM and that turn on temp is approx. 225 degrees. Secondary stock is the 238 temp. The only way to get the primary to run by itself is to have a secondary fan switch at a higher temp than the ECM controlled 225. The thermostat temp is irrevolent for this situation. I tried every different stat and different fan switches and found that the stock setup from an engineering standpoint is the best for overall reliability of all components. Most likely you have a 195 stat, that is almost universal in every make and model-even my sportbike has a 195. The only other way to get the primary to run first at a lower temp is to edit the prom in the ECM. You can run a 180 stat which is very popular with most of the guy's here but I would not recommend anything lower. Lower stats reduce engine efficiency hence gas mileage. I have a zz-4 block with a now completely stock engine management system and I average 24mpg on the highway in overdrive. When I try a stat at anything lower than the 195 she drops to 17-18mpg. That tells me something. No matter what you read 225 degrees for the primary is perfectly OK with a good cooling system and properly operating fan control. Hope this helped.
