Check Engine Light?

Will the Check engine light come on from over-heating??.My guage doesn't work (I'm fixing that today) But on the way home yesterday I got a check engine light... I get the light all the time for other reasons. the previous owner did a hack job on the carb install, I removed all the smog. But I was stuck behind a bus and sitting at idle for a while so I assumed it was trying to overheat. Also what would cause it to over heat? I have an air-dam its kinda beat up but its there. Its got a new waterpump...Only problem is coolant reserve is hardly hooked up. And the anitfreeze in it is prettttttty old. I also have no bottom part to my fan shroud...Is that a necessity? Thanks for any help.

well its only one hose from the bottom of the resorvior that goes to the top of the radiator.. it would help to hook it up and use it..

also i would change the coolant also..
