overheating problem

I drive the car all the time and one day i was driving it and the temp was fine all day...All of the sudden it shot up to 260+ relatively fast. I went to check/replace the thermostat and there wasn't one in there? the previous owner must have taken it out...anyway...hot water was bubbling out of the top of the coolant reservoir. I shut the car off and let it cool...I then looked in the coolant reservoir and there was nothing at all in it....???I filled the coolant tank to the cold line and started the car the next morning, let it idle, and boom right back up to 220 and climbing...WTF? the v-belts were kinda messed up so i replaced them....could it be the water pump? how much do one of those costs?... thanx

oh yeah after i let it idle, the coolant began to bubble to the top of the tank again...could it be a clog somewhere? or just bubbling out because its so damn hot?

could be the pump.. also check the fan make sure its coming on.. When my fan would kick in the coolant would bubble back into the overfill tank scorching hot.

also make sure you still have your air damn but thats only for highway overheating problems.

I would say water pump or fan not kicking in

Well I put a thermostat in and the gasket was bad so I changed that again and the damn housing cracked because it was old and extremely cold out...so I went out and just bought a new housing and new coolant temp sensor and put that all in nice and tight, now is just stays at around 190*-220* is that about good? doesn't seem to wanna overheat anymore....did I do alright? lol
