pros and cons of aluminum radiators?

My stock radiator recently broke, and I am looking to get a new aluminum one. I might have a deal on one out of an iroc. My friend told me that they rust and oxidize very quicky. But I know that they are much lighter. Do they really offer that much other than weight savings and do they really corrode easily? Should I look into a copper one as a thrid otion? Thanks for all your help.

Steve

Umm hmm.. I dont know, there may be some issues where aluminum radiators might be bad...but aluminum does not rust, at all. Ever. It -can- corrode, but generally speaking its a very long lasting metal. On top of lighter, its stronger (most aluminum/steel alloys at least)...copper will also not -rust- so to speak, but it will oxidize, like MAD, MUCH faster then aluminum or probably even iron/steel

I'm pretty sure the one out of the iroc is an aluminum. So I don't know why he would tell me that aluminum radiators oxidize so quickly and that I should stick with steel or copper, and then offer me one out of the iroc! But it's nice to hear what you guys think. I'll most likely go with a Griffin aluminum from jegs, but im not sure yet.

steel radiator? if you go with a aluminum rad. get a universal one thats 31x19 i'm almost positive thats the biggest one that will fit. also if you get a universal rad you may have to trim the edges to fit.

i meant to ask about the proper mods to get a universal in there. I took some measurements on my stock one the other day, and i was thinking about getting the griffin univ. replacement. Does anyone know exactly i have to do to get it in there? Thanks.

well, the one have is the universal 31x19 and to properly get it to fit the ac conderser has to go. and it will sit in tight but, it will fit ok.if you go with the universal rad. you will have to run a external tranny cooler. which is not a problem (you should have one anyway!!) other than this id sugest some rubber or foam padding on the sides of the tanks to keep it from rubbing a hole in it. oh yeah dont and mean DONT EVER under any cicumstances run "green" antifreeze through a universal aluminum rad. it will clog it in a hearbeat, no matter what anyone says dont use it . use dex cool or evans npg.
