AC/heatercore removal

Anyone know if the ac/heater core is difficult to remove by yourself or if it should be done by a mechanic? Also anyone have any ideas how much it would cost to be taken out? I hear the thing weighs something like 40 pounds.....

Well....first your on the wrong board.

Second. No its not hard to remove the AC/Heater box. If your present system is charged, you "should" have it evacted by a licensed AC garage. (Keeps the greenies happy, as they are all freon phobic). Cover the resulting hole in the firewall with some .090" steel or .120 aluminum sheet.

Depending on year you will need a AC delete pulley (serpintine).

the a/c is separate from the heater core...

i would get a standard heater box and keep heater core in for a daily driver car, so you can defrost the windows and keep warm.

um SATURN5. the heater core does not have freon running through it. The heater core is located under the dash and has warm engine coolant from the radiator running through it. This is how it produces heat. You are thinking of the condenser which is a part of the ac that is mounted in front of the radiator to exchange heat with air to cool the freon in your ac.
Yes it is easy to replace the core yourself, no need for a mechanic unless you don't feel like doing it yourself.
