I purchased a 160* stat today and installed it. i saw numerous articles about how cooler is better for gas mileage and performance. i looked around and noticed how people are now saying it reduces gas mileage and increases emissions. is this true or are people trying to deny the fact that their 180 or 195 stat is not as good performance wise? i dont really want to go through draining the radiator again to switch the stat back to 180 or 195 unless it reduces gas mileage a lot. so pretty much is 160 bad and how much gas mileage am i gonna lose if i dont switch it back?

i don't think the people with 180 or 195 stats are jelous of those with 160.. If they were im sure they would switch over.

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=161229 as was shown in the sticky at the top. Now if u have a specific question regarding the temp to use that wasn't answered in that thread then please ask, but i believe most questions have been answered there.

if u are concerned about loosing gas milage i would recomend driving around a month or so with the 160 and switching to the 180 or 195 and comparing..

I will take your advice about the stat. i live in ohio so i think 170 would have been a better choice. i didnt know there was a stat that was 170 and i wasnt given the option.

I used a 160,170,180,195 in mine and it 'likes' the 180 stat the best. Keep in mind that if your fan isn't turning on close to 160(like say 170), the stat won't do you much good. In cold weather it will run close to 160, but in hot weather it will probably run up to the temp where the fan kicks in(200+)

You don't HAVE to drain all the coolant to change the thermostat. Just wait until the engine is completely cooled off, and drain out of the radiator until the fluid level is below thermostat level. It's not much. Then squeeze the radiator hose that connects to the thermostat to get most of the fluid out. When you take it off, you'll still get a bit of fluid out of the hose, but not much. Just put an old towel around the area before you take the thermostat housing off. Just give it a top off after you get your thermostat in there! Matt
