Temp Gauge

i have a serious problem with my temp. gauge! sometimes it works and others it doesnt. i looked for the temp. sensor but i dunno where it is at and i dont even know if that could be the problem. it peaks when i start the car but once i relase the key and it begins to idle i look and the gauge is back below 100 but not to the point where its not reading cause when i turn the car off it drops a little. someone help!!!!

On the left side head between plug 1 and 3 there is a temp gauge sending unit with a one wire connector going to it. Make sure it's hooked up to the unit, otherwise the gauge won't do anything.
