A/C Recharging

I have a 90 Rs V8 that i want to recharge the A/c system on. I have the hoses and stuff and the R-12 but. 1 I have never recharded a A/c system. and 2. My dad said he would help me but he cant remember wich side of the system to put the R-12 into. and Wich side is wich. Please be descriptive in yalls replies they will be greatly appreciative. Because Here in Tx it's already getting HOT!

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, service the LOW side. If you hook up to the high side, you can explode one of those cans in your face, then you'll be at the hospital having pieces of R-12 can remved from your head and face. Not cool. The low side is the side with the accumulator drier on it. It's the silver canister looking thing. It has a servicing port right on it. You can service it there if you want. Or, you can find the port that is in the line somewhere. Usually close to the accumulator. Anyways, you need to service it with your engine and your AC system running. Put the AC to max, and the fan on high speed. Service the low side untilyou get to about 35psi with the AC running. When it's not running, you'll get a higher reading. I'm pretty sure it's about 35psi. It should say on your guage, or in the instructions. If you're still not sure, just call an AC shop and ask them! If your AC system is totally empty, I'd convert it to R-134. But if you're just servicing it, use R-12. Good luck! Matt

KC10chief is right check the canister or on the compressor and it tells you how many pounds it takes and you should have it vacuumed out and check for leaks but its probably better if you convert to R134, but its really strange i read a couple of reports online stating that R134 can be more damaging than R12 ,who knows

As I've stated before, I'm in the HVAC business. (Residential, but the basics are the same.) red_82_z28, in light of the fact that you have never charged an A/C system, I don't think you should be doing it yourself. It may need to be set at 35 psi, or it may not, depending on conditions. I'm not trying to be a smart-***, but I think you should either find someone who is knowledgeable and willing to help you or either take it to a pro and pay the money. The refrigerant charge is very critical.

I know a lot of people who don't know squat about refrigeration who charge their own A/C's. I also know I make a lot of money off rookie mistakes. Please don't get upset, I'm only trying to help.
