check for debris between the radiator and the evaporator (or condensor which ever it is), the thing that looks like a radiator that's for the A/C. when the A/C is on it becomes hot and needs lots of cool air to cool it. if there is a bunch of leaves and junk between the two it can block enough airflow to make the radiator not work as well and make the car run hot.

when I pulled the radiator and A/C out of my 85 TA there were enough leaves and junk in there I don't know how it cooled at all.

Simply put, running the AC make radiator hotter(it's in front of the radiator). If the cooling system can't keep up with the additional heat, the temp will rise. To fix it, you need to figure out what in the cooling system isn't working good enough. Does it do this on the highway?

mine gets real hot in stop and go traffic, if it gets dangerously hot crank your heater on full blast and watch your temp gauge fall. once i hit the highway though im cooled down in a matter of minutes

Sounds like there is not enough air flow across the rad/condessor. Do you have your air dam in place? You probably do but it is worth asking.
