Smoked A/C compressor clutch???

I was driving home from college a couple weeks ago (230 miles) and the A/C just went warm during the trip and is now as warm as the vent. I just had the system converted and charged in july. I thought while I was driving I got occasional whiffs of clutch. Now the compressor doesn't spin at all and the air is still warm.

Is there an actual clutch (made of similar material as your tranny clutch, because the smells I got were the same) in the A/C compressor? Is it realistic to think I smoked that?

How should I approach diagnosing this problem?

I thought about bringing it back to the guy who converted and charged the system but I'm still at school until mid june, plus I'd like to try and save some money if it's something I can fix myself.

Thanks.

There is an A/C compressor clutch, but it is an all metal face plate. It would not give you the smell of a transmission clutch burning.
If the A/C is low, a pressure cut off switch located in the accumulator will prevent the A/C clutch from engaging. I would check to see if the A/C system has any freon in it and what your line pressures are.
