Factory setup?

I was wondering what the factory setup for a 84 Z28 HO was. I have a single fan and a 2 core radiator and someone told me it was for a v6? My car overheats bad because my fan doesnt work all the time ( I think it might be shot) should I switch to a mechanical fan? Thanks for your time

I can't help you on how your 84 should be from the factory, but I can help you to get your car to stop overheating. I would fix the electric fan. They work great when they are maintained well and they don't rob you of your power. Plus if thats the way your car came, then I wouldn't go backwards, ya know.

If your fan is intermitently not working, check the wiring, relay, and switch. It may be something simple like a bad connection or faulty switch or relay. Don't rule out the fan motor though. When you are having trouble with the thing not coming on, does the fan come on when you turn on the A/C? I guess that depends on if you have A/C...

You could try some searches here. May threads have been done on fans not working, intermitenly or not at all...

Good luck

Sorry i didnt explain how its hooked up. I have it rigged up myself because the previous owner took the relay out. I have a wire going into the battery with a 25 amp fuse (it is spliced into the line going to the alternator) and the other line goes to the switch. I turn it on and off with the switch but the fan only works when it wants to. I had it working for 30 mins, then when I got home, opened the hood, then closed it, the fan quit working until this evening. Thanks for the quick response.

Your switch may be bad. Most garden variety switches are not made to handle the current the fans draw especially at turn on. When you use a manual switch you should leave the relay in or get one and switch the coil side of the relay as in ******* diagrams here on the site. Chilton does not show electric fan control for 84 so it was either belt driven or they are wrong which happens more than it should.

In 1984 the L69 had an electric fan, the LG4 was mechanical.

I think it may be worth you time and energy to try to put the wiring for the fan back to original. I think it would eliminate a lot of problems. It may be so far gone thought that re wiring it is not a feasable option. Good luck either way...
