Best Re-man AC Compressor??

Who makes the best remanufactured AC compressor? I 've got an '88 Trans Am and my compressor's seized. It's R-12. Thanks

Would this one work? Should I convert to R-134A, or stay with R-12?

I'm getting this compressor for my 305, but I plan on upgrading to a 383 soon. Will the same compressor work for both? Anyone??

the compressors don't care about engine size (cubic inches) as long as you use the same brackets, I have heard alot of argument about switching to 134A, I had it done by a professional a/c shop and I hate it, it doesn't cool worth a crap. I am considering going back to r-12 or something like it, then I have heard alot of people who switched and have great cooling, when you put in the new compressor make sure you get a new reciever/dryer and orrifice tube to go with it. they're not that expensive and will save you alot of agrivation down the road.

I fitted a new compressor from NAPA. It seems fine.
The R134 compressor has a smaller pulley to make it run faster, also the suction pressure needs to be higher at about 40 psi, than the R12, which used to be at 20 psi.
I used a new suction pressure switch, accumulator, expansion / restriction insert. The cooling is fine.

I did the same thing you did and got a NAPA reman. and had 134 put in the system. At first I was really upset at how poorly it was cooling. After a short time though, it seemed the refrigerant just needed to cycle through the system a while. Now even with glass tops I can't really complain about it.

The other thing I did was get a $60 guage set. I noticed watching the guages that I had to run the engine for quite a while before it would suck in enough refrigerant. Also I think it operates at a much higher pressure, so if the suction pressure switch is not changed out the cooling wont be adequate. It seems fine now.
