thermastat not the problem

for about the last week of to my car has been running very warm in town, 220*-240*, but everyonce in a while it would run normal temps. it also runs at neer normal temps going down the highway, but i believe having the duel snorkel does a lot for highway driving to cool it down. so i figured it was the thermastat going bad. yesterday i went and baught a 180* thermastat, i put it in today and go fro a drive around town to see how cold i run now. well heres the big suprise im still running inbetween 220*-240*

what would cause it to run so hot but everyonce in a while work fine.

im guessingits the water pump going out, but have had no experience with one, so im not sure

tell me what you think

what do you consider "normal temps"?

220-240 sounds about right for a third gen

normal in town is abotu 190-200 when driving, and when stopped at a light or whatever it goes up to 210-220

when i drive down the interstate its normally about 160-170
