When I installed a tranny temp guage I did it when I change the tranny fluid so I had the pan off. I bought a temp guage and senser at carquest. I drilled hole in the pan and installed the senser which came with a brass fitting but i bought a steel fitting so it could braze it to the pan and installed the guage under the dash. I put in a tranny cooler shorter after. A believe it was a medium sized cooler but it probably wouldnt hurt to get a smaller since im not pulling anything. I also installed the cooler before the radiator so the tranny fluid would have a chance to warm up.
