Air Conditioning

i have a 5.7L 350 tpi in an 87 iroc and it has Air Conditioning, but the electronic clutch on the unit turns on like every 20 seconds it seems, now from what i know and what people have been telling me shouldnt that electric clutch only operate when needed not just turn on, when not in use not to mention every bloody 20 seconds? lol becuase im sure its not helping power and fuel economy, considering at idle she revs up everytime the unit turns on. any ideas

The clutch should only operate when the conrols are in the ac or defrost position. Every 20 secs is an uncommon cycle rate for the system. How high does the idle go up? The rpms should rise about 200rpm when the clutch cycles on due to the increased load on the engine.

if its doing this when the AC is on, its probly low on refrigent.. so the cutoff switch shuts it off...

Yes, that usually means low refrigerant.
