92 lo3 gets hot sporadically
my 92 rs is getting warm, no, hot. I have a new modine radiator, (less than 10,000 miles on it) which i have just pulled out cleaned flushed and put back in, it has a new water pump which also has the exact same miles on it and does not leak out the weep hole, (althouhg it looks a bit wobbly, so does almost all of my accesory pulleys) I have a 160 stat since due to a elusive code 32 I cant get it to run in closed lop anyway so i figured it might as well be cool.
background: about two years ago my radiator cracked so i put a new radiator and water pump in it and a 160 'stat, six months later i could not afford the insurance so it went in the shed.
18 months later: the car ran fine like 170 degrees for 3-4 days, hten it started getting hot, i put a new stat init then another since it would fluctuate from like 190-230 so i thought it was just a sticking stat, finally i looked and AHA! there was a bunch of stuff between my condenser and my radiator, cleaned it and cleaned flushed raidator, problem solved! I thought... 1 week later similar problem except now it would start and in 5-10 minutes hit 235 or so then go down to 180 then get as hot as you can imagine until you shut it off. play with thermostat feels sticky or something put a new one in, fixes problem for a couple days. then it stays cool all day after about 150 miles, just gets plain hot, no going back and forth or anything, since it usually went back and forth i ran it till it was too hot expecting it to go down and it boiled almost everything out. i filled it up and it's run about 180-190 for 5 days with a 160 stat, still reading? wow. I dont know what could be wrong except a cracked head/head gasket or a hose somehow but i think i put new hoses on it too, so i really am stumped, it doesn't blow bubbles into the resivoir all the time but some times it does, doesn't make a difference in the bubbles if you rev it or not, if anyone has any advice/ideas it would be realllllly appreciated, since i have absolutely no idea, oh yeah, electric fan which is wired into ignition and is working. thanks!

Parker I also had a 92, rs ragtop, 305, auto. I have the same problem you are having, temp moving up and down. Drives me crazy.
A few weeks ago I was listening to a car repair radio talk program.
I immediately called in and explained my problem. I had cleaned my radiator, of debris changed the stat, and coolant, my water pump and hoses are less then a year old. And I still had the same problem.
The mechanic adivised me that on older camaro's the guages ten d to lose accuracy, he told me to check the actual water temp with a themometer, and even better take the car to a shop have it put on the diagnostic machine and check the actual engine temp, not the coolant temp. I haven't had the time to do it yewt, but it makes sense before doing major changes. Good luck.

trust me, this beast is getting HOT. its boiling over pretty good when it says it's hitting redline, i really think, that although the gauge might not be spot on, it is getting pretty darn warm.

You can check the accuracy of the gauge without an expensive scan tool. All you need is a pot of hot water and a thermometer. Then just pull the senser out of the block and put it in the pot.

Thanks alot for that info, I've decided to replace all my gauges with digital gauges I got a great deal on Ebay for CyberDyne digital gauges. I have already fabricated a new gauge cluster with my dremel tool, only wish I could afford the ProComp guages.
