Youll get a small amount of surface rust but its no big deal. Just do a flush with a garden hose to get rid of any loose rust flakes.

Empty

Might I ask why the coolant system is empty? If your concerned, I think you should refill it with 50/50 to keep insides for rushing. That for sure is the safest practice.

The difference between the rust in an empty vs. filled engine isnt all that great. Its always a good practice to do a quick flush on a system every year because rust forms no matter what you do to prevent it.

Given a choice between leaving a car parked for an extended period with the coolant full or draining it, I'll drain it every time.
