5.0 TPI IROC, will not warm up ??

Hi all,

This is a copy of a thread i have raised on the UK AACI 3rd Gen Forums. And im Hoping someone here can help me with my issue.
See Part 1 and Part 2 below.

The Full orig thread is here.

.........................................

Part 1.

Hi all,

I have mentioned this before to various people, but now the weather is getting colder my problem is getting worse.

Basically my IROC Never gets Hot. Even after sitting in Traffic for half an hour going nowhere it will only creep up to 170 F.
Typically all the time it sits on 150 F. I also notice that the right hand colling Fan ( sat inside the car ) runs all the time. Well after about 10mins of driving.

The condition of the Thermostat is unknown, so i might order a 195F Stat from Usauto right now.
It is my understanding that the ECU controls the Fans on these cars ?? which is wierd because mine has a stock GM chip, and i would not have thought they would set the fan to run this way.

The main problem with it running so Cool all the time is that the Gas Millage Sucks. I get about 180 miles to a whole tank. ( £33 )
Not sure what that is in MPG but its not much !.

Can anyone help !!, please !!.

Many Thanks in advance.

EDIT: PS: Just ordered a Stat from USauto. £4.50. The guy said 87's are all 195F so thats whats on its way. In the mean time please keep any suggestions comming !.

Part 2.

Ok,had a look at my stat today and it already had a 195F stat in there !!!.

It was a real Pig to get at in a TPI as i had to remove the throttle Body, all the cables and the Microswitch that has been fitted for the Nitrous.
Even though it allready had a Thermostat, i fitted the new 195F stat anyway together with a new gasket.

I started the engine from Cold...... and guess what.... the Right hand Fan came on after only 4.5 minutes of running !!.
I removed the ECU and took a picture of it together with the Chip.

Its on the bottom of Page 5 on my CarDomain site if you want to see a larger picture. As you can see the Chip that is fitted says "Delco" which would indicate it is a Stock GM item. So IROCFAN i guess you did not change this one, unless you took the chip out before you sold it.

I am really confused as to why my fan is coming on so early.
Please keep any ideas coming !!.

If you opened the system there is probably air that needs to be bled out. Trapped air will cause all sorts of intermittent problems.

You need to get a scanner and check when the fan comes on based on the temperature that the computer is seeing. It's possible that the temp sensor for the computer is bad.
