Guage explanation please!!

I own an 89 firebird and I never know how hot am running. The guage gets up to almost 220 and drops down to 1-2 lines below 220. Now I do have headers and they are really close to the sensor. Also, when I open the hood there is no more of that heat hitting you as when I had the manifolds. The engine seems pretty damn cool, but I just dont know what to think of the guage.
Now if you guys could post a pic of the guage and tell me which lines are the temp readings it would be great, and I also belive this will defenetly solve the mystery of 180 being the halfway between 100 and 220, although I know this is ture on the camaro gauges. Thanks. I appreciate your help!!

well i'm just gonna take a shot in the dark and say that your temp sensor, that displays the temp on your dash guage, is between your #1 and #3 spark plugs in the driver side head... check your wiring to it, and if it's all good, replace that sensor. coolant will come out that hole, so be aware, and top it back off when you're done.
