Temp Gauge Doesn't Work

Got a 1982 Firebird S/E 305 4 bbl carb. I've replaced the sending unit on the left side of the head, but the unit still doesn't work. Before it stopped working, it used to wiggle a lot, and would stay in one place, and after that it died. Now, I know that the gauge works because it pegs itself when I turn on the ignition, but after the car starts, it pegs itself in the other direction and stays there. Any suggestions or ideas as to what might be my problem?

Wiring might be shorting out or disconnected/loose so it gets spikes and such. Could also be the gauge itself.
