loose radiator cap...

my cap was loose and i was over heating. i got the air pocket out but still have some trouble. after i tightened it, it seemed fine..but...itd go up near 220 then go back down to the normal spot (180 stat) and it'll stay there. later that night after driving it a wile it bubbled in the res. but tiny ones, not like the night before when i noticed it over heating. so, the next day i bled it. accually i took off the cap when it was running and anti freeze went everyware. so since it came out when it was running i figured that was prolly alot of the problem. but..ever since its still doing the near 220 after i drive it up the road for a few mins. then it goes down again. it sometimes does this when i have the cap off long periods of time. i had it off for about 20 mins letting air out of the radiator. i had problems with a heater core leaking and i put that bars leaks stuff in it a few weeks ago. i put one in a month ago then 2 weeks ago put in another. could there be a block up somewhere or am i just still working out the bubbles? sorry about the long post, lol

If the heater core is leaking, spend the $20.00 for a new one and 2 hours to install it. Pretty easy. I expect you will be motivated to do it as you are in NJ.

I don't know about the Barrs' creating any blockages, but two capsules should be plenty enough to block a 45 slug in the radiator. (Kidding)

If you heat up to 220 and then back down to 190 to 200 range, sounds like normal to me. I've been driving and building cars for 25 years and have yet to let any "air" out of a radiator.

Good luck.

Jim.

yeah today accually, i replaced the thermastat and it had some crap stuck in it. around the bottom edges. it was brownish, somewhat silver. kinda felt like paper mache but looked kinda like wet wool (nice spelling huh!...im so tired..) but..im guessing its from the barrs leaks crap. the car sat for 2 years before i got it because it was at a body shop as a project car. the guy couldnt pay for it. so..could it have dirt in it? i plan on fixing the heater core soon. i hope its as easy as u guys make it seem. i looked at the hoses 2 it to day and that in its self looked like it sucked. u guys have any idea what that stuff may have been?

sounds like rust which is somewhat normal.

Probably should take it to a car shop to have it professionally "backflushed" and cleaned out. Cost's less than 50 bones here, and it may give you a good starting point for any further diagnosis.
