Over Heating
My 86 IROC-Z overheats ever time i sit and i cant figure whats wrong with it i changed the thermo to a 186 maybe lower dont remmber for sure and someone told me the air dam but that only helps when u going doesnt overheat while rideing only when stoped and idealing my buddy says i should try to flush the radiator but i dont want to do or waste alot of money on it just want to know about what wood be the main problem thanks guys.

I also have the same problem so I would like to know to. My dads 86 Iroc will be fine will driving but once you stop the temp starts to rise pretty fast.

Your cooling Fan probably does not turn on..Actully I have the same problem.

Yeah my fan workes that was the first thing i checked then i changed the Thermostat but it still does it ?

I have the EXACT same problem. I changed my thermostat, first to 160* then to a 180*. Flushed out the radiator...to no avail. Replaced one of the two fans (neither were working) & rad fan switch [all this done at a shop]. now, when idling temp goes up ~230 idle, but when driving it stays at 180*. Is this a problem? What else can we do?

do your fans turn on at all ....might want to check the fan relay it cost like only 3 or 4 bucks to replace .....you can bypass the throttle body heat passages since it makes the TB hot to the touch

My dads Iroc has the single electric fan, is it supposed to run once you start the car up or once you reach a certain temperature?

once you reach a certain temperature ....they should turn on for electric fans......

i would try just as an experiment, hard wiring your fans to something like your ignition switch, so then everytime your ignition is on your fans are running. and see what your temp does then. thats just me tho.

Overheats, or climbs to 260 degrees? There is a difference. Does your overflow tank hold water? and do you have extra coolant in it? What is the ratio of water to coolant in your system? Some people want to fill it up with antifreeze and then put in some water which is a mistake. Because these are aluminum radiators, use distilled water not water from the hose they'll last longer. This sounds retarded but is your thermostat in correctly? It's not uncommon for people to put their thermostat in upside down. Also, many of these engines are strapped down with a lot of smog stuff. GM designed these engines to run a bit hot so that the fuel would burn more complete and thus less emissions. That way GM could show the EPA that their cars were compliant. A GM mechanic will tell you that 230 degrees is not too hot at idle.
