best/cheapest alum. radiator
im looking for an aftermarket 2+ core radiator for my car, i know summit sells some for i think $160-$190 but i dont know if they will work with my car, id obviously need to measure mine but has anyone used them and liked it, i think mine is partiall pluged and i just recently got a pin hole in it and figured its time for my 400 to get cooled down the right way. so if anyone has any suggestions it would be great.

The 31x19 will fit with a little modification to the tray. Otherwise, stock size is 26.5x17.5 + or - a few
Good luck

Ive got the northern 31x19 (summit/jegs are northerns). I moved my tray down 1-1.2 inches with a little more angle. A BFH will fix the width issues

I am using the 31x19 Griffin and I love it. Almost no mods to it. Do a search and you will find my thread on the install. Had to cut the rad support on the drivers side and install washers on the fan to make sure it wouildn't hit the rad and the rad was a tight fit. Used some rubber strips on the ends so it wouldn't rub. You might like the Howie rad as well. Someone here uses one and he says its better than griffin.

yeah i see the howe product is a little more(200 bucks) but would be nice if it fit better than the griffin. i might go with the griffin one like yourself. i have a stock dual fan setup on the car so hopefully that fits in there well. does your 406 stay fairly cool? i dont run a thermostat on mine and down the interstate in 5th(3.27 gears) it wont drop below 190 but in town it wont be too bad as long as i dont sit in one spot for a while(210ish) its just the stock LG4 radiator that came in my car factory.

If your looking for an easier install go a little smaller than the 31x19, biggest thing is getting the hoses to fit right
Takes a little work.

maybe?

But I have since changed to 160* stat. Also, my aluminum heads really help the cooling as well. They dissapate heat better. But even brfore I put the heads on, the rad ran cool with the griffin.

ForShock, that radiator looks fine, its what half inch shorter and narrow one inch. will that fit alot better?

May make it so you dont have to mod the tray. Lowering the tray made the lower hose have a really, really tight fit across the wonderbar.

I'm using the summit (northern) and it runs great. if the car is moving, even at like 15mph, it keeps the temp at about 170, and I'm running a 180 stat. when i stop for a while at a light, my dual fans kick on. I have a hayden thermo control unit so they kick on at about 190. my heads are cast iron, and i haven't had any problems. you will have to use a BFH to slighty clearance the area where the rad slips in, but it's really really minor.. i only hit one side. there's a piece of sheetmetal that isn't flat against the cor supprt, but should be, and it keeps the 31x19 from fitting perfectly. I have a stock steel hood, and closes fine. you will have to fab up your own shroud, though. i'm using plumber's tape for now. also, you'll need flex hoses. 1.75 x 1.75 x 16 inches on the bottom, and 1.5 x1.5 x 30 on the top. it's a pretty easy swap.

what did you run for radiator hose? i dont want to spend alot of money just for flex hose. but i see griffin sells a 27.5x19 would that make me be able to use my stock hoses? and am i going to lose alot from it being 3.5 inches more narrow?

you use flex hoses with springs in em because the inlet/outlet sizes are different. in stead of 1.25 and 1.5, they're 1.5 and 1.75. so no, you won't be able to use the stock hoses.

Yes, you CAN use the stock hoses, it just takes A LOT of effort
I have the stock lower hose, but took a shortcut on the upper (1975 Corvette Upper).

i did not know that would work. I tried using my old hoses and didn't like the fit, so i changed to flex hoses. flow is much better, and the cooling from the bigger hoses and radiator is top notch.

The nicest thing you can do for your local parts store counterman
is to take a wire hanger, bend it exactly like you want it to route,
and label the I.D.'s on the appropriate ends-and be patient when
you hand it over......as a counterman, I love to get involved with
cool projects, but hate 'tude. I guarantee that in a fully stocked
parts store, you will find a hose that will work!

seems there are problems with v-belt cars, but on my serpentine it fits great and I've put about 5k miles on it with no problems at all

i like your radiator, but it's pretty different from mine. mine is taller, the neck sticks straight up, not angled like yours, and i have no drain ****, trans cooler, or sensor bungs. also, my outlet sizes ar bigger. It's a full race radiator, which is why mine is so different, vs yours, which was designed for this application. overall, a great buy, but after seeing yours I **almost** wish i had found it and bought it first. good thread, by the way.
