thermo stat and air conditiong question

Well yesterday and today the heat in Chicagoland was 93 for the first time in over a year. I got into some bumper to bumper situations and noticed that with my air on max my temp gauge went up to the first red line which sems to be 250 degrees. Now I have no leaks in either the coolant lines or air conditioner. The car did not act like it was hot nor did it run bad. When the air was turned off the guague eventually went back to 220 and below. Looking under the hood everything seemed normal. Is this type of action from my guage normal? This is my first summer with my '92 so I am just curious. Oh and I just recharged and retrofitted to 134a with no problems. Car was super cold all day.

The air conditioner transfers heat from inside the car and puts it right in front of the radiator (I can explain the process further if needed). So yes the engine may run warmer with the AC on. It should not get to the red though. Do a complete check of the cooling system, maybe a flush and fill and new t-stat, clean any debris from the radiator, make sure the fan is running, and make sure the air deflector is in place.

Does your car have dual radiator fans?

Do they both come on?

Single fan. I think I found the problem. My air (reman) pump wentout last night and is being replaced by OEM. I think it started to go out that day it got real hot and everything else was a coincidence.
