fan switch

ive read some people recomend installing a switch in between the relay already there heres the thing. my fan comes on w/ the air conditioner but not on its own. changed thermostat, relay, temp sensor, and fan motor, still same thing. im just gonna put a switch on it cause i think they butchered the wires when they swapped the engine (i have a 91 rs w/ a 305 tbi and they swapped a less mileage 89 305 tbi firebird) so i dont want to put the switch between the relay. i have a small relay i bought from advanced thats a relay for lights or other acc. i belive its 30 amp (im not at home) and i have the switch could i just wire one hot to the switch one ground to the switch then cut into the red wire on the fan motor connector and run it to the switch?? wouldnt this work just wanted to check before i messed it up even more!

Go to the tech articles, there are diagrams on how to wire a switch. DO NOT run power for the fan directly thru a switch, use the switch to drive the relay. On the pass side between cyls 6&8 there is a small brass fitting with a single wire, that is the fan switch. It closes to ground and turns on the fan relay. If the fan runs with AC the relay and its circuitry are OK. Some people get the temp guage sender confused with the fan sw. The guage sender is on the driver side. It's probably only a single wire you will need to fix, I would go that route as opposed to dealing with an external sw. Worst case is you will need to run a new wire and attach it to the fan relay.

yeah i changed a thing looking almost like a spark plug on the front of the block more on the driver side i belive on the top front of the block. did i not change the right thing i belive the part i asked for at the parts store was the temp sensor...so theres a fan switch also?? and so i would run the wires the same way i said but just to the relay then run a hot from the relay to the switch and a ground to the switch?? so where exactly would i splice into the fan motor to put the relay on by the connector? since i dont want to run it to any wires that might be wired wrong now? if that makes since. thanx!!

I gather, from reading other tech articles, that the secondary fan temp. switch is on the passengers side in around the exhaust manifold, so yes, you must have changed the wrong temp switch.
